You are welcome any time, as are any other list members in the Newton, Iowa area. Regarding other chatter questions: A) I would prefer to use my head for things other than bludgeoning someone or something. But then again, I've never done it either. Maybe it would be very effective. B) I am over 18 and post occasionally when I feel I can add something (which isn't often). There are a number of people who post here regularly who do a great job on their own without *my* two cents. :) I go to class four times a week for varying lengths from an hour and a half to two and a half hours. I would do more if I wasn't married... :) C) As I understand it, a list of names of the list members would go on and on like the Energizer bunny. But I'm game if everyone else is. D) On the note of "Have you heard of..." or "Where is...", I was wondering if anyone else on this list is now or ever was connected with Grandmaster Suk Ki Shin from Omaha, Nebraska. Just curious. I wrote my Ph.D. dissertation (in U.S. History and American Studies) on the history of boxing and judo in America from 1845-1945. I teach lecture courses on the martial arts at Indiana University at Bloomington, and recently reviewed martial arts entries for Encyclopaedia Britannica. I'm currently serving as the Asst. I work out about 4-5 times per week, which is made easier by the fact I've got a dojang in my basement. It seems to me more people in the US would be interested in TKD /Judo coverage ,(because of personal involvement), than many other sports covered. We should start e-mailing NBC. (Yi Bros. Tae Kwon Do) after spending much recouperative time kicking a wavemaster bag at my employer's gym. I decided it was time to go back to the school because my kicks are just about back to normal (Albeit eight inches lower :p ) I had visited the dojang about two months back and everything seemed to be sliding, only 6 kids and 12 adults, but it was summer and people usually take the summer easy. This still made me feel somewhat guilty, I had broken the two knobs off the bottom of my top leg bone (yes, I squealed just like a little pig when it happened) and previously I have tried to kick with only a swollen and tender knee to show for it. I digress... Last friday I show up and the Dojang has been downsized by half! Theres no one there (I still have my key). I have never had such a sinking feeling before. I grab the mail from the box and head in to the office. There's a message on the machine from a parent wondering when there will be an instructor in the dojang again. I alternated between grief and anger at the situation. I called the parent and said that there would be class today. I stayed for the adult class and found 4 students and an instructor. GM Lee arrived shortly after and was very happy to see me. He explained that the instruction was sporadic because of work schedules/other activities of the black belts and that we would be moving the dojang to Auburn (about 10 miles south.) I offered to serve again as an instructor. Master Lee is a man of few words but when he said "Yes, thank you!" and shook my hand. the smile and relief on his face spoke volumes. Our other GM, Master Yi (Master Lee's brother who chose not to americanize his name) is expected back from Korea where he opened an English/TKD school. I suppose everything will get back to normal soon. My leg is at the point where it can do single kicks all day, but fast combinations are scary as my knee wants to bend in towards my other leg if my pivot isn't perfect. Although its disconcerting, I think I'm becoming a better instructor because I'm not kicking as much - I'm watching/instructing the students more. My question come about from a conversation I had with a third dan that watched my class. After which I asked for a critique and any ideas he had about the class. He told me that I do not push the students hard enough, and that kids really don't listen too well to explanations about why you need to pivot completely, extend fully, blah blah etc etc. He indicated I need to have them kick, kick, kick, and then kick some more. Technique will come over time. What do you folks say? Many of the other Police Defensive Tactics groups encourage head strikes, and students wonder why I don't. A very small percentage of the population is responsible for creating/causing fight situations. Whether it is law enforcement related, or just some moron you glanced at wrong at the grocery store, it is still the same type of human. Try and get a mental picture of the standard aggressor. Do they have an aura of cleanliness about them? Are their teeth and gums in excellent condition? and the best question I use is Would you be willing to kiss this person? lol....probably not. Now, granted, some of the more violent people out there don't fit the general profile....but most do. Most of the people I have tangled with on and off duty have been the scummy type. To me, this means that they dont believe in showers (or bathing in general), are prone to poly drug use, and do not maintain a level of health that most of us associate with being normal. HIV, Aids, Hepatitis A,B,C, and any number of bloodborne pathogens have the potential for being present in the bodies of aggressors. Head strikes done to the face area are very likely to break a nose, split a cheek, bust lips etc., which all cause blood to flow. If you happen to head strike to the teeth and break your own skin open, you are inviting all of the creepy crawlies that may be present to enter your body and kill you or make you very ill. Your head (aka: the complex computer that runs your body) is fairly important for proper functioning. Hitting, or getting hit in the head can disrupt how you function. I have severely disrupted people by hitting them in the head. Your head is also supported by a cervical spine and musculature that does not seem designed to hold the weight. As much as we try to condition the neck, it is still very fragile....just sleeping on it wrong can hurt for days. Bottom line is I do not encourage the use of head strikes except in certain grab/hold situations where normal weapons are tied up and useless.....but to get in these situations means that you have failed in tactical avoidance and awareness. Not going to Jeremy's wife, that is, but learning it yourself. You don't have to learn the entire Korean language to learn how to pronounce and write Hangul. I did a lot of studying on my own (books, audio tapes, etc.) and with a couple Korean friends in college. But my "real" Korean language training came at a Korean church in Des Moines. They were *very* happy to share their language and culture with me. One might have to look a little bit to find a place that teaches the language, but I highly recommend it for anyone interested. Even if you only do it for a few months (like four :), it is very enjoyable and *very* educational. Learning the characters and how to pronounce them would probably only take a few hours of trying. (Actually remembering and being able to use them would take a little longer, though... :) Good luck to anyone who wants to try this. I can recommend a couple written sources if anyone would like. (But I don't have them with me so I can't do it now.) Respond on the list or by off-list email. Shaun M.
