My 11 year old son was diagnosed with Type I JV Onset diabetes a couple of years ago. I really have to watch his carb intake, and watch for symptoms of low blood sugar during workouts. I'd like to hear from both sides, experiences from a purely student's standpoint, and from any instructor's. Thanks! I will, however, include some topics besides just Taekwon-Do. In no particular order: 1) Gen. Choi's _Encyclopedia of Taekwon-Do_. Yes, all 15 volumes (hey, I like to read). 2) Gen. Choi's 1965 text, _Taekwon-Do_. Yes, there ARE noticible differences between this and the above text ;). 3) _Taekwon-Do: Theories of Defensive Movement_. By Mark McCarthy (? on first name - I'm at work and can't check). This is a great resource for creating angles and openings from blocks and dodging. Out of print, I think. 4) Forest E. Morgan's _Living the Martial Way_ is also a must read for anyone interested in Martial Arts (whatever style). 5) _The Book of Five Rings_ by Musashi. Should grace the shelves of every martial artist. More important, should be READ by every martial artist. 6) _The 36 Strategems_. Perhaps a little bit more accessible than Musashi's Go Rin No Sho. 7) _Koryu: Classic Martial Arts of Japan_, Diane Skoss, ed. Wish there was a counterpart for Korean MA's out there somewhere. 8) _The History of Taekwon-Do Patterns_ by Mitchell (can't remember author's first name). This is a great resource for learning Korean history, especeially for those practitioners of the Chang Hun patterns (but I'd highly recommend this to any Korean MA practitioner). 9) _The Techniques of Taekwon-Do_ by Jimmy Too. Excellent book from the early 1970's. Out of print, from Malaysia. I know, I know I haven't included _The Art of War_. But I haven't actually READ that one (yet). Also, has anyone read Dr. He-Young Kimm's _Taekwon-Do_ textbook? I am interested in buying it but would like a little information first. I've looked on quite a few web sites, but there doesn't seem to be much info about weapons used. Many thanks Richard. ------------------------------ From: phlame@net1plus.com Date: Mon, 25 Sep 2000 15:13:55 -0400 Subject: the_dojang: Hwarang Do Hey all, I'm a sixteen-year-old who has been going to TKD class three times a week for two years. I'm interested in learning more breaking and self-defense skills, as well as sweeps and speed. I'm considering checking out a Hwarang Do school that's in a nearby city. Would this be a good idea? Any other martial arts that you guys would suggest for someone looking to work on these skills? ------------------------------ From: Piotr Bernat Date: Mon, 25 Sep 2000 16:21:04 +0200 Subject: the_dojang: Re: Testing kids > no need to fail them, just don't let them test until they are ready. agreed Gary, we do the same in our school - with one exception, this being the summer camp test.
