There are bunches of other arts that would meet your criteria, but first you need to find out what's available in your area. ~Daniel >------------------------------ > >From: phlame@net1plus.com >Date: Mon, 25 Sep 2000 15:13:55 -0400 >Subject: the_dojang: Hwarang Do > >Hey all, I'm a sixteen-year-old who has been going to TKD class three >times a week for two years. Juan Moreno USASport: Taekwondo Event: Olympic flyweight (58 kg/128 lbs) Born: April 1, 1971 Birthplace: Libertyville, Illinois Residence: Miami, Florida Height: 5-foot-10 Weight: 127 lbs. Olympic veteran Juan Miguel Moreno finished runner-up in the traditional finweight division at the 1988 and 1992 Olympics, where taekwondo was a demonstration event. He then retired from competition, got married, and opened a martial arts school in the Chicago area. In 1995, while attending the U.S. Olympic Festival as an organizer, his competitive fires began to rekindle. Having relocated to Miami, he resumed training in pursuit of a medal at the Sydney Games. Moreno's comeback got off to a slow start: He didn't compete at the World Championships in 1998 and lost in the second round of the 1999 worlds. His breakthrough came at the 2000 World Cup Championship, where he won the traditional flyweight division. At the Sydney Games, he will compete in the Olympic flyweight division. Moreno has lived in Colorado Springs since joining the U.S. Olympic Training Center in February 2000. Before and after Prior to retiring at age 21 following the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, Moreno was among the United States' best in the sport. He won four consecutive national tiles in the finweight division from 1988 to 1991. Moreno, whose brother Carlos also participates in the sport, won gold at the 1991 Pan American Games. After coming out of retirement, Moreno won both the 1998 and 1999 U.S. National Team Trials. ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Wed, 27 Sep 2000 18:52:04 PDT Subject: the_dojang: Barb bio ...bio from nbcolympics.com Barbara Kunkel USASport: Taekwondo Event: Olympic welterweight (67kg/148 lbs) Born: September 17, 1969 Birthplace: Tacoma, Washington Residence: Colorado Springs, Colorado Height: 5-foot-7 Weight: 143 lbs. Olympic dream delayed Barbara Kunkel will represent the United States in the women's Olympic welterweight division (67kg/148 lbs) at the 2000 Sydney Games, where taekwondo is making its Games debut. She was responsible for earning America's Sydney berth in this weight class by winning at the 1999 Pan American Regional Olympic Qualifier. Kunkel made the national team for the first time in 1993, and in 1995 she moved from her home state of Washington to the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, hoping taekwondo would be added to the Olympic program for the 1996 Games. Though disappointed it wasn't, she continued with the sport. 'Kneed' another sport During the early 1990s, Kunkel's athletic focus was on basketball. But her junior college career was derailed by two knee operations (one right, one left), each to repair torn anterior cruciate ligaments. After the second knee injury, she turned to martial arts -- first karate, then taekwondo. Her initial taekwondo instructor, 17-time South Korean national champion Sang-Hyuk Cha, had never taught an American, so communication was difficult. To learn his language, Kunkel attended a Korean elementary school in Federal Way, Washington; at age 20, she found herself in kindergarten, sitting in a chair made for 5-year-olds. Since Kunkel had done some homework beforehand, she was quickly promoted to sixth grade. ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Wed, 27 Sep 2000 19:01:52 PDT Subject: the_dojang: . ------------------------------ End of The_Dojang-Digest V7 #622 ******************************** It's a great day for Taekwondo!
