I couldn't help post this...but I've studying TKD since around June. I've finally had a chance to try competing in sparring in a tournament. I was in the white belt (I am a 9th gup, with my 8th gup being awarded next week) heavyweight, adult divison. Unfortunately, there were no other white belts for me to spar with. Sooooo I had to move up and spar with 2 orange belts. It was that, or take the gold in my division with sparring, and that isn't my style. Anyways, the tourney was the 8th annual Asian Tang Soo Do Federation Tournament in Belle Vernon, PA. It was held at Belle Vernon high school (3 hours from where I live in Cleveland). Long story short, I feel pretty good about beating an orange belt...although I still have alot to work on. In total we are around 45- 50 Students. I am currently a green tab. What keeps me and the rest of the students going back is the overall friendliness of the instructors, their strong and unrelenting will to teach Tae Kwon Do, and un-abusive use of discipline. Above all they inspire us to love Tae Kwon Do not just as a sport and a martial art but as a way of life. If your club has a large proportion of young students I strongly suggest that you organise some social event such as BBQ's every couple of months, this may sound out of place, but it realy keeps the younger students commimg back, and it helps keep them off the streets and off drugs. I am sure you will succeed. best regards, Carmelo Gauci. ------------------------------ From: "Carmelo Gauci" Date: Sun, 1 Oct 2000 09:11:55 +0200 Subject: the_dojang: Magazines Thanks to all of you who have given me advice. Although I am only 9th Gup, I was able to beat 7th gup's at the 8th Annual Asian Tang Soo Do tournament in Belle Vernon, PA yesterday (Saturday). There wasn't anyone in my division to spar against, so I moved up. Other than a VERY sore shin, I am feeling pretty good! I only started taking TKD in June.
