The Chung Do Kwan, I believe Song Moo kwan and later Moo Duk Kwan (Hwa Soo Do) all called their style Tang Soo Do. They were probably all teaching the Pyong Ahns and what several of their founders learned of Shotokan in Japan. Tang Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan went a different route from Tae Kwon Do (also Moo Duk Kwan), as it continues today. As much as you could call anything traditional in this short time frame, Tang Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan probably most closely resembles the 1940's style. Soo Bak Do has been changing, Kukki-Taekwondo as well. Congrats Udell! It's great, isn't it? My first (and only, so far) tournament experience was much the same. I was an orange belt (8th gup in my school) in the female, middleweight, beginner division. The one person in my division was a no-show, and there was no way I was going to miss out on a part of my first tourney. :) So they moved me up into an intermediate division with a green belt and a purple belt. The purple belt beat the green belt, then I sparred the purple belt and won. :) I wasn't wearing my glasses, and had been behind 2-0 at break time, so nobody was as surprised as me. It was a small victory, but nonetheless quite rewarding. In November we have a big tournament, and in two weeks my school has an intra-school tourney as sort of a preview. I can hardly wait! :) - -Sarah Pride- ------------------------------ From: Andrew Pratt Date: Mon, 02 Oct 2000 10:14:57 +0900 Subject: the_dojang: Carsten's post Hello Carsten, good to see you posting again. >> Danny wrote: >Why would young men want to paint their faces an sing on >certain mountains? There is, believe it or not, another Pratt in Korean studies. Keith Pratt is at Durham and lectures on Korean music and is no relation. My research is on the military of the much later Choson period (though that does not stop me having an opinion on the Hwarang!). Best wishes, Andrew p.s. Thanks to Ray for the nice review of Sarah Stevenson. Korean TV only showed the final so I have not seen that fight. Sounds like she did well. ------------------------------ From: "Shaun M. Not only are we classmates (whether students or teachers, because in reality we are all some of both), but we are all friends. Besides that, I demand maximum proficiency from my students physically and try to teach them the true meaning of martial arts training. I think the students respect that (on the whole) and respond well to it. Every school is different, though. It is great to get input from this list because there are some very experienced, knowledgeable martial arts instructors on here. However, whatever advice you receive, make sure you do your own thinking and come up with your own strategies, too. Good luck! Shaun M.
