Early 1999 I was at a seminar with GM In Sun Seo, Pres. Korean KIDO association, World KIDO Federation. At This seminar GM In Sun Seo publicly announced the official recognition of the ICHF as a Kwan in the Kido Federation and presented GM Pelligrini with certification to that effect. I was there. NBC wouldn't due any coverage on TKD in the olympics, but they are more than willing to sell us coverage. I don't believe they will be the only game in town. So it wouldn't be disrespectful for me to hand out brochures in the parking lot of his school? In the interest of "fair play"? >> I guess if the landlord of his school allowed you to do a kickboxing class in his parking lot (kind of what the gym has allowed), then you would have to use your judgment as to the merits of handing out your brochures. Comes down to your definition of disrespect I guess. In either case, and someone else suggested this as well, it is better to have a man to man "chat" which hopefully will resolve the issue. These situations can be handled multiple ways. You can ignore it (not wise). You can attack it (expect counterattack -- ego might just be an issue here). Or you can appeal for fair play. I teach my children that two wrongs do not make a right. That an injustice should be repaid by kindness and caring. What you give will come back to you, maybe not immediately, but in the future. Do not stoop to the other persons level. In this case, if this is the approach of his school, he will attract and keep like minded students. The "good" ones will leave, and hopefully find a better school. This was how I was brought up--and in my "senior years" I am enjoying the returns. My kids are mirrors of my past (though brighter than I was, and much better looking). Just my 2 pence worth (that's about 3.1/2 cents). At the dojang I attend we have some difficulty retaining women after a certain level. It is mainly due to falls. Most don’t have a problem doing rolls and back, forward and side falls, the problem is with what we call sky falls (basically- a roll using no hands landing in a side fall position, looks a lot like a flip) The problem is not with ability, some have the most graceful I’ve seen, they just don’t like them and end up quitting when the curriculum starts calling for them to do them frequently (the techniques become more advanced). Has anyone had a similar problem and what advice can you offer? I read somewhere that Aikido has one of the largest percentages of women practitioners and it is an art of falls/throws so there must be a solution somewhere. Thanks Brian ------------------------------ From: Melody Cookson Date: Wed, 04 Oct 2000 12:21:53 -0400 Subject: the_dojang: Kid retention Our school has a pretty decent retention rate, so we must be doing some things right. Essence of it is, if it takes a village to raise a child, we're all part of the village so we might as well hang out together. We do quarterly potluck dinners, Pokemon trading days, Halloween and holiday parties, Buddy Days, etc. More importantly, we encourage all kids to compete if they want to - then we go to tournaments together, cheer each other on, go out to dinner as a group after. Close relations between competitors at a school keeps the interest up, and tourneys challenge a child to get better techniques, and better at performing in front of people. Also, we have a large group of parents who end up taking TKD too. Emphasize the family thing, and be prepared to lighten up on the serious atmosphere sometimes. Just our formula... - Melody Director, East Coast TKD, Atlanta ------------------------------ From: Kas001@aol.com Date: Wed, 4 Oct 2000 12:30:37 EDT Subject: the_dojang: Re: Poor Judgement In a message dated 10/4/2000 8:41:32 AM Central Daylight Time, the_dojang-owner@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com writes: > > "Certainly poor judgment, but probably not disrespect. > You say he knows you well. If you do something you "know" in your heart is wrong or disrespectful there is no such "excuse". Be true to yourself. ------------------------------ From: "Daniel G."
