These awards are predominantly for the members of the AHG, however we do have one award that is for International Excellence. This award is meant to recognise a member of the international Hapkido community who has performed above the norm. In an effort to make sure that everyone gets a fair chance in this award, I would like anyone of the list who feels they know of someone who needs to be recognised to forward me details of that person. For more information on last years recipients go to the URL listed below. The 1999 recipient of the International Excellence award was Master JR West. I look forward to your assistance in finding a worthy recipient for this years award. Regards Master Geoff J. I have always appreciated your support when I was creating havoc on the TKD net with an infamous moderator. I have subsequently toned down my approach. However, while your waiting for a response I want to revisit some of my basics. It was enhanced with the movie, "Kill or Be Killed." I think the actor's name was Ryan (escapes me now). Anyway, one character in that movie was called "Hotdog". He has few basics in martial arts, but used an eclectic blend of splendid tricks, re: thumb tacs on the floor, mayonaisse bombs, and sordid tricks to defeat his enemy. Quite funny but also a lesson learned,i.e., use the tools around you to win. This could include trash can lids, tree limbs, dirt, sand, and so forth. Not pretty but effective. Are these the basics or am I off on a tangent ? Does anyone know of that movie. It was quite humorous. The sequel was Kill and Kill Again. Really made me laugh. Like Steven Segal looking for Richie in Out for Justice. Anyway... By the way, I opened the package. Lo and behold it was a bottle of crown royale. Thanks and I am sending a private message to the individual whom I believe forwarded it to me. Splendid thought. Perhaps this is why I come out of lurk mode. Ah, the smell of it ! Perhaps a little test is in order. This test has been designed to evaluate reactions of martial artists to various situations. The situations are based on actual case studies from well-known educational and martial artists associations like Napsta; Read each question thoroughly. Place an X by the answer you feel is most correctly justified by circumstances given. Be prepared to justify your decision. 1. You prepared a proposal for the Regional Director of Martial Arts Schools on the East Coast. The success of your presentation will mean increasing your rank and prestige substantially. In the middle of your proposal/presentation, the Regional Director leans over to look at your report and spits into your coffee. You: a. Tell him you prefer your coffee black. b. Ask to have him checked out for any communicable diseases. c. Retaliate in his "out" basket. 2. Your at a dinner with the GrandMaster and his wife--who looks like the regional runner-up of the Majorie Main look-alike contest. Halfway through the dinner you feel a hand on your lap. Being resourceful you: a. Accidentally spill hot coffee in your lap. b. Slip a note to the waiter to have your GM paged and see if the hand goes away when the GM does. 3. You have just spent the night with the GM in Seoul who invited you to an all night boiler-maker drinking party. You get home just in time to go to work. You stagger to the men's (or women's) room and spend the next half hour vomiting. As you are washing up at the sink, the GM walks up, blows his cigar smoke near you, and asks you to join him for drinks after work. You: a. Look him straight in the eye and launch one last convulsion at the front of his Itawon made suit. b. Fill in the blanks. McD... __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Jack ------------------------------ From: Piotr Bernat Date: Sun, 08 Oct 2000 21:56:53 +0200 Subject: the_dojang: Taekwondo Styles Together... I had a special experience last Saturday. Once we were invited to take part in the GTF goodwill tournament in Mlawa, in the north of Poland. Despite being WTF styled, our team entered the event and had a good time, winning a total of 15 medals. Recently the leader of this school, Witold Gromowski who is a 4th Dan, called me asking if I would conduct a seminar for his students, introducing some ideas from the WTF style. I agreed and went to his hometown of Dzialdowo with my best student. We taught two classes. It was an unique experience to me when I stood there before a group of GTF students, seeing a group of black belts and high coloured belts, and even the 4th Dan was there training... Being a 3rd Dan myself, I felt a bit strange ;) But the whole event was fun and I was impressed by the GTF students doing their best wearing WTF body protectors and learning the basic WTF style footwork. It was a special experience to all of us. In December, we`ll meet again - we will host a tournament and this time, we will invite the GTF people to our hometown... Seriously though, everyone that I have trained with in the Moo Ye Kwan Hapkido Dojangs can take very hard falls, it is a big part of the curriculum. You must "learn" how to fall, and there is a logical process that you go through to build up to taking those hard jump circle falls, it is a learning process and by the time you get to the point of being able to take those hard falls then you have paid your dues on the mat. When I go to some Hapkido schools and nobody is taking falls then I know that they haven't actually "learned" the true essence of Hapkido. Hey I take falls every week and I am 42 years old, it is just a process that you learn and then it is not that big of a deal. I will tell you this, you can't learn this kind of thing from a video or a magazine! You better have people training you that know what they are doing or you can get really hurt, and I mean seriously hurt! Michael Tomlinson ------------------------------ From: "K T" Date: Mon, 09 Oct 2000 17:05:57 EST Subject: the_dojang: nagging pain Any suggestions for the cause or home remedies will be appreciated. After a number of x-rays and some expert opinion (all to no avail) I find I am left with a nagging pain deep in the right knee. There is apparently no floating bone, spurs, misalignment etc. In short the medicos don't know why the pain occurs. The suggestion is "Don't do what causes the pain." Which is sound advice unless you need to do the exercise to loosen up the rest of your body. Having said that, the right knee hurts when I do a lunge type stretch to stretch the left leg and sometimes there is pain when I jump although this is intermittent. There is no ongoing pain when I walk, run or swim or after a work out. (Apart from the normal aches and pains of a solid work out.) Heat rub helps a little but not to a point where the pain is not noticeable. I've been doing TKD for a year and am presently a green belt. I'm 42 so there's a little wear and tear in the old frame but am also weight for height at 6'2" so I'm not carrying too more than I should. If anyone has suggestions for ways of strengthening the knee or a great suggestion for nullifying the pain it would be appreciated. Thanking the list for listening in advance.
