Sparring for the first time (or even after a long lay off) tends to get the body a bit nervous or excited. Your breathing suffers and your mind will tend to be a bit wild. This is a natural phenomenom (sp?) and this last for a bit. You will need to get over the conscern( read fear) of getting hit and wondering what to do (because, you will find that, everytime you make a strategy, it wont work). The only thing you can really get through this is to just spar. Eventually your body will learn how to relax, your breathing will come naturally and you will become light on your feet. At that point, it will become a new type of classroom for you. Until that time, diet wont be the first factor towards hurting your performance your mind and breath will be Just my thoughts Stone. ------------------------------ From: "Rudy Timmerman" Date: Sun, 15 Oct 2000 20:15:05 -0400 Subject: the_dojang: Front stance A number of posts discussed the front stance after the question was placed about the position of the rear foot. > Subject: the_dojang: Front Stance > > Good description, Dave. That is about the same as I learned/teach. However, > it's different in ITF, different in karate, heck, different in fencing and > yoga. > > Hard to say it's right or wrong, just consistent. Right or wrong is no doubt as difficult to determine as religion with reference to the bible. Perhaps the way I teach it is wrong, but I will continue to teach it that way until I see for myself that the results prove me wrong (and that has not yet happened). As with a number of previous schools of thought, I teach the front stance with the rear foot and front foot facing the front. My reasons are strictly for fitness and health benefits, and we do not necessarily fight from these positions. My pro reasons for keeping both feet facing the same direction are: A long, low front stance will stretch the Achilles tendon, the gastrocnemeous muscle, and the the hamstrings etc. of the rear leg. When the front knee is over the toes of the front foot, this stance also works muscle groups of the front leg (although not the same). Keeping the back straight helps stretch the pelvic girdle, gluts, and aids in balance. In our school, we also keep the feet about one shoulder width apart. A narrow stance helps us in developing balance and allow for quicker turning required in some of our techniques. My con reasons for turning the rear foot out are as follows: It has been my experience that facing the rear foot out can result in lateral pressure to the knee of the rear leg. Consequently, this can result in all sorts of knee/ligament problems. In addition, when the rear foot faces out, many students also turn out their hips. Thus, when punching to the front, the result could cause unneeded twisting of the spine and a possible loss of power. The reason I posted this is because a number of posts used this same stance format, but no one explained WHY. As I said, there are probably as many reasons to do the front stance another way, and I don't argue them. Instructors need to do what they believe in (or what experience has taught them). My two cents are just a personal observation of my experience. The ONLY time I have difficulty is in when we are doing sprint type training when I find my soles get hot on the carpet. Other than this I have great control over where the feet are planted. As for Athletes Foot (I guess Feet is correct for two?), I have taken great care to dry my feet after any work out, shower or whatever, and have eliminated the problem. I used to suffer (should I say SUFFER) when I took less care, but since the drying I have never seen a recurrence (in 20 plus years). Since Athletes foot is a fungus I think this makes sense since keeping a fungus dry prevents culture and growth. My input, for what it is worth.
