I've been trying to think up some useful ideas to protect board holders when folks are attempting to break. Has anyone out there come up with a clever (possibly mechanical) alternative to just "hanging on and praying"? I ask because time and again, I've seen people holding boards correctly only to have an overzealous kicker blast the holder's fingers with an errant kick. Just this Saturday, I was recruited to hold for a competitive breaker in a tournament (GM H.K. Kim's tournament in Cincinnati, OH - fun time!). I was holding with a partner for what I thought was going to be a flying side kick over a folding chair. No no - this guy wanted to do a flying back-kick. His first attempt was a swing and a miss so he settled for a jump back kick. His power was admirable; his accuracy was not. His heel smashed into the board directly across from my bottom hand leaving an impressive cut and an impressively huge bruise (I was debating on getting the thing x-rayed Saturday) on the fleshy part of my palm just South of the thumb. Needless to say, I'm going to be very reluctant to hold in the future for anyone I don't know. If there were some sort of board-holding stand out there though... - - ---===--- Jim Griffin My MA school -> www.wuma.com My personal site -> sitebuilder.liveuniverse.com/jgriffin/ _________________________________________________________________________ There was a company putting out a plastic hand protector for the holder. I bought 3 sets of them and have been very satisfied. When I tried to buy more the company was out of business. Too bad since they work really well. This would be a good business opportunity for someone. It was also reported in a previous post that GM Ji also uses "eight". My Instructor trains us to identify if our opponent has a long and trailing Kiap. This identifies an exhale, and if you believe that you can take advantage of an exhale, then it is worth being able to identify long and trailing kiaps. We do use a different sound, specifically designed for quite, when deemed necessary, it is part of our 3rd degree promotion. I am interested, David. I tried to respond to your email address, but visioncompass.com bounced it back, saying that the recipient name is not recognized. I will be 48 years old next month and I have "never" been flexible. I will be taking my WTSDA black belt test in the spring (I hope) and would appreciate any help with a program to improve my flexibility before then. The velcro is easy for people to figure out, and the core is a bit harder than the regular century or the adidas ones that I have. During training, I need to absorb a good deal of punishment, and playing a badguy during scenario training yields some pretty zealous blows from adrenaline filled officers! If you are looking for maximum protection, there are a few very thick chest protectors on the market ie: redman, bluemax, fist, hitman, but they really limit mobility. I originally started MA's to be the baddest *@$#$^ on the planet.....my sensei soon beat that out of me. I get a lot of enjoyment from training law enforcement, and am thankful I have the skills I do when I myself am on patrol. The no-nonsense, high speed, low drag, adrenaline filled, scenario driven training, that is full of foul language, stress, loud sirens, and various other sundry environmental additives is always a blast to partake in, and watch! I enjoy teaching fellow officers fighting skills that work, and watching them apply them during scenario testing. I equate it to the same joy of seeing a gup rank win their first tournament, finally kick a pad with a difficult kick, or succeed on a hard break. I also find pleasure in being the only one in the dojang, and using the center of the room to do the dozens of forms I know......just me and the hyung. I love talking to students and other instructors about history and learning new forms that seem to have no practical purpose whatsoever...learning just for the beauty of it.
