The most common way it to say "Ne" (rhymes with 'hay', 'bay', 'stay'.) You might also say "Ye" (also rhymes with the above words). The former is, by far, more common. The latter is more formal and typically written rather than spoken. Both are fine though for answering your instructor/master. To say "I understand", however, is different. The polite way to say it is "al-la soom-ni-da" (where all "a"s sound like the a in 'father', the 'oo' sounds like the vowel in 'took' and 'book', and 'i' sounds like the vowel in 'knee' or 'free'). To politely say "That's right/correct", "You're right/correct" or "Exactly" or "Like that", you'd say "Koo-reo ssoom-ni-da". ("oo" sounds like it does above in 'took' and 'look'. "reo" sounds kind of like the English verb 'row', but the [o] sound is not as broad. I.e. it sounds like it's halfway between an English [o] ('blow', 'hoe') and an english [u] ('luck' or 'duck'). Hope this isn't more confusing than it is helpful. Regards, Ryan Shroyer Korean Linguist, USN - ----- Original Message----- "...Is there an equivalent to this in Korean? What would be a short phrase in Korean to indicate, "Yes, I understand," or, "Yes Sir" ? Jose'" ------------------------------ From: "Mac" Date: Sat, 28 Oct 2000 08:50:46 -0500 Subject: the_dojang: Korean translation ? From: JSaportajr@aol.com <> Jose', You could use "ne sabom nim". Only problem is that in English, saying "ne" sounds like slang form of "no". The other word for yes is "ye", which is the only acceptable form when writing but is also used in speaking. Again, this does sound more like "yes", but doesn't sound formal as it sounds like a disrespectful "yes". I guess that is why most dojangs tend to use "yes sir" or "yes sabomnim". I only know of one person who regularly uses the Korean "ne" to agree with me, which really throws me off at first (I won't mention any names, OK Master Richards? :-) Mac ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Sat, 28 Oct 2000 8:48:40 PDT Subject: the_dojang: 2nd Korea Open Chunchon International TKD Champs The 2nd Korea Open Chunchon International Taekwondo Championships 2001 June 30 to July 5, 2001 Hoban Gymnasium Chunchon City, Korea Period of application = February 1 - May 31, 2001 For more information contact: The Organizing Committee of Korea Open Chunchon International TKD Champs Hoban Gym 30-1 Seoksa-dong Chunchon City Kwagwon-do 200-180 Korea 82-33-250-3648 ~ 9, 263-3647 ~ 8 FAX: 82-33-261-3647, 250-3650 kocitc@chunchon.kangwon.kr Ray Terry raymail@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Sat, 28 Oct 2000 8:51:30 PDT Subject: the_dojang: . ------------------------------ End of The_Dojang-Digest V7 #694 ******************************** It's a great day for Taekwondo!
