I want to pass this true story on to all of you...This is truly an inspiration to all martial artists, but specifically TKD, as an example of how TKD strengthens the Spirit, the Mind, and the Body... I attended a tournament in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on Saturday...one of the competitors was a woman in her 40s and she was wheel chair bound...I have seen wheel bound competitors before, but everyone was making a very special recognition for this particular woman...she competed in Board breaking and took 2nd place...hand techniques only and her hands were in soft splints...she was suppose to compete in forms, but she didn't feel confident enough as turning her chair is somewhat painful and difficult in performance of a form.... This woman is a brown belt....1st Gup if I remember correctly....she was preparing to test for her Danbo when she had the accident...after the accident when she was all but paralyzed...all of the doctors said she would never be able to stand on her own let alone walk ever again...a few weeks ago...she approached the door to her Dojang in her wheel chair...to the students and instructors amazement...before crossing the thresh-hold...she stood against the door...folded her wheel chair...and walked across the thresh-hold...unaided...she then needed to be back in her chair...she practices TKD in a swimming pool...where, she needs no support at all and can move and practice her forms without aid...her goal is to walk unaided and test for her Black-Belt by Christmas 2001... Here's what happened...and this is nothing less than a miracle... She is a skydiver...she was using a training shute with a computer which automatically releases the shute at a certain altitude...she jumped from 5000 feet...the computer did not open her main shute but did cut the main shute upon failure...the reserve shute failed to deploy as well...about 50 to 100 feet above the ground, the reserve shute flared creating a little drag...but not enough and at way too low of an altitude...she hit the ground and it was rocky....not soft soil...not a field....she obviously survived and she owes her survival and her strength and abilities to her TKD...the doctors have stated that it was probably her TKD training that helped her survive...it is certainly that which is allowing her to stand and walk on her own...I asked her instructors to notify me when she tests for he Black-Belt so I can attend... Please pass this on to your students and fellow classmates...Thanks The One and Only...
