However, i will appreaciate it very much if any list members can give me the Han Ja spelling for GM Choi, Yong Sul's name. I've got the spellings for "Choi" and "Yong" but not so sure about "Sul". Could it be "Tree"? Thanks in advance. S. H. Wee ------------------------------ From: ABurrese@aol.com Date: Mon, 13 Nov 2000 07:45:46 EST Subject: the_dojang: Self-Defense Essentials done My new video, working title "Self-Defense Essentials," is finally in the can. We filmed this last Friday and Saturday, two long days. I'm happy with the way it went, and so is Paladin. I had some great people to help me, and in addition to the inside instructional part, we filmed a lot of out side shots doing little scenes where the person being attacked uses the stuff I was teaching outside. Most of these were me, but I had Yi Saeng do three, and another friend, Deb, do three of them too. Some of these scenes turned out great. We all went the extra mile to make them good. Everyone took some good shots and hit the ground hard to make them good. I feel it is a very good basic self-defense video. The primary audience is someone with no MA background, or the martial artist that wants to know a bit more about the street and what works there. I wanted to fill a gap that Paladin had. It was a lot of fun to film, and I'm glad we finally got it done. Now I can work on different projects. Only bad thing is that it will be at least 12 months, maybe longer before it is released. If I can answer any questions or provide any clarification please don't hesitate to contact me. Within the framework of the art I teach (Hapkido) "mat hours" or time in rank is as follows for the four guep I use. White Belt - Level One-10th, 9th, and 8th Guep-Minimum of 78 hours (with approx 1.5 hrs per class.) Yellow Belt - Level Two - 7th, 6th, 5th Guep - Minimum of 156 hrs Blue Belt - Level 3 - 4th and 3rd Guep - Minimum of 234 hrs Brown Belt - Level 4 - 2nd and 1st Guep - Minimum of 312 hrs 1st Black - 2 years 2nd Black - 3 years 3rd Black - 4 years 4th Black - 5 years and so on. Please note that many Hapkido schools use a 10 Guep system which is why I have noted the equivalency above. Also, let me say that completing the necessary time in rank does not mean the person tests automatically. At Midwest Hapkido having time in grade raises the individual to candidate rank at which time they determine when they feel they are prepared to test. You would think that most students would be chaffing at the bit to test and make rank, but time and experience have demonstrated that it takes quite a bit of encouragement to get a student to take the plunge and put their abilities on the line. In Kumdo (Kum-bup) things move a bit faster. Given that a student is attending 3x a week and figuring about 1.5 hours per class, each of the 10 gueps take about 30 hours or two months. The Dan ranking has no limit for the first 3 Dan. I guess theoretically one could take their 1st BB, followed the next day by their 2nd, followed the next day by their 3rd. 3rd to 4th however is three years, 4th to 5th is three years, and I believe 5th to 6th and 6th to 7th are 4 years respectively. I should also add that the judgement of my GM in addressing when an individual is ready to test can be very subjective, such that there is more to being invited to test than simply having the necessary time in rank. I hope this is of some help. Best Wishes, Bruce W Sims www.midwesthapkido.com ------------------------------ From: "Sims, Bruce W. Is there such a thing? I am interested to know what MA books are available in Korea that never make it to bookshelves in the US and how I might go about making contact with a source for these books. Your help would be appreciated.
