I have a number of students with this problem, and would be interested to hear others' comments/solutions to this. Thus far, my solution has been to have those students sit with their hips against the wall during this portion of our stretching routine. This allows them to sit up more. Another way to work your splits would be to lay down on the floor against a wall and do the splits on the wall letting gravity do the work. My 2 cents... Silke Schulz ------------------------------ From: "Mac" Date: Fri, 17 Nov 2000 09:19:24 -0600 Subject: the_dojang: posterior pelvic tilt and the splits << Since my pelvis has a natural slight tilt to the rear (most people tilt forward, if at all) I had to spend a great deal of energy in my abdominal muscles just to try and lean forward. While most other people can naturally relax into the stretch, my weight naturally sinks backward and I spend all my energy tring to just hold the position and get very little stretch out of it. My question is this: Does anyone else have this problem and know what I can do to fix it? >> Yes sir, I have the same problem. Maybe because of this, my lower back tends to give me problems. Some of us I think are just built different than others. For the past couple of months, my back was really bad and is only recently now to a point that I'm beginning to work on stretching again as the pain has subsided. Now it's just stiff and a little sore. But I'm with you, it is very hard for me to simply sit up with my legs stretched apart without the feeling of falling backwards. When I try to stretch my legs, I usually feel it in my back first. I'm getting very frustrated with my flexibility >training since this weight shift seems to make me work harder for less of >a stretch than I should be getting. I don't want to sound like my near-year of experience holds up to your four years, but this is what has been working for me... just lately, in fact. Usually, when we do the sideways split stretches, I also use my abs to keep from falling over backwards... as such my abs get a nice bit of attention, but I can't concentrate on the stretch. Lately, it's been getting better, and I think it's due to the focus I've been placing on that stretch. The instructors keep saying to try and roll the knot of our belt out... so that we're leaning forward with our hips (sort of) instead of our shoulders. This rotates my hips slightly enough so that I no longer have to lean forward to maintain balance. Now that I can sit without trying to stay up (this breakthrough occurred Wednesday) I can focus on trying to get my legs out more than 90 degrees.... Something else that helps me get a stretch is partner stetching. I can actually get a stretch that way, since I don't have to hold myself up... I think a combination of the two might help. It certainly has been helping for me... Of course, there's also the study that Mr Reed is doing going on... which has yet to start (unless I've been missing the emails) so I'll probably know a whole lot more about stretching in a short while. :o) Jer ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Fri, 17 Nov 2000 14:48:16 PST Subject: the_dojang: light traffic List traffic has been light the last three weeks.
