I've seen many student try to sit with legs spread out and then bend the back into an ungodly curve to try to place their foreheads to the floor, meanwhile their hips remain upright. What I always tell my students is to try to "roll the hips forward" while keeping the back straight. Many of them I made myself. These days I carry in it: Over a dozen wooden knives and 12 wooden swords, several real large knives with the edge filed, a dozen or so five foot bong, about 1 1/2 dozen canes I made myself from PVC (I was taught how to make them from Master West), several wood canes, about 20 danbong, several fans and some old white belts. Some of the danbong I made from wood out of 1 inch walnut and other hard wood like the bong, but the danbong that are more gentle and conductive to practice I made from 1 1/2 PVC and like the canes are wrapped in electrical tape after a good sanding. Here in Indiana we teach only hapkido to children and adults. In college at the Texas A&M University Self Defense club back in the early 80's we taught hapkido, taekwondo and yudo. But then you had everyone who was about the same age and we had a 2 hour class 6 days a week which included taekwondo, hapkido and yudo Monday - Thursday, a 2 hour sparring class Friday night and a 2 hour weapons class Saturday morning. They are implying that you have sufficient grasp of the Gup level techniques to render a meaningful opinion. Relax and be yourself. Pay attention to areas for improvement that the entire group needs work on. This will help you greatly as I assume you also assist with classes and or teach on behalf of your Sah Bum Nim from time to time. Again ask yourself, what basics and/or fundamental concepts need work. <> This is pretty standard nation-wide. Some people with large youth programs split youth and adults. I personally prefer entire studio or mixed age same gup level groups. Typically in a mass test I will test 9th trough 7th Gup candidates first. Since breaking and free sparring is not required at this level (by me) I don't use test time. This lower ranking is usually done in an hour to an hour and a half, depending on my mood. Sometimes, if the group is small enough, I will make the senior line up behind the juniors for this phase of the exam to test their endurance and review their basics. The advanced portion of the test with free sparring and breaking at the end can take up to two and a half hours if I have any red belt candidates (2nd or 1st gup). I'm sure everyone is using what works for them :-) Your in Jung Do, Charles Richards Moja Kwan TSD _____NetZero Free Internet Access and Email______ http://www.netzero.net/download/index.html ------------------------------ From: "hununpa" Date: Sun, 19 Nov 2000 15:08:38 -0500 Subject: the_dojang: ITF/WTF 4th Dans Although I generally stay out of the ITF/WTF discussion, I will offer this on ranks and testing. The Korean culture places an emphasis on the number three. Our (Korean) Dan system is based on three levels of three. 1st through 3rd Dan are adept students (Yu Dan Ja, Kyo Sa Nim), although usually qualified to teach classes. 4th through 6th Dan are chief instructors of schools (Ko Dan Ja, Sah Bum Nim). 7th through 9th Dan are Masters (Kwan Jang Nim, Chung Sah Nim). I would agree that the 4th Dan is a Dan examiner as he/she is qualified to promote to any of the student levels including student Dan. The way I had it explained to me, 4th Dan is instructor, 5th Dan is Master Instructor, and 6th Dan is Senior Master Instructor. 7th Dan carries the tittle of Master. My Instructor refers to me as Mr. Richards and as a Master Instructor (TSD applies master status to 4th Dan). My students call me Sah Bum Nim. Ray Terry raymail@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com ------------------------------ From: WojoSG@aol.com Date: Sun, 19 Nov 2000 15:40:06 EST Subject: the_dojang: Testing and Thanks Hello Digesters. Saturday was test day at Garcia's TaeKwonDo in Hartford, CT. I am now wearing a 1st Gup belt (brown with black stripe). I wasn't sure if I was even going to make it to the test, though. At tuesday's class, I was practicing a flying side kick with a re-breakable board. Good takeoff. Perfect strike. The board broke like butter. The landing was a different matter. In a nutshell, hardwood floor, hip, ribs, elbow, noggin. Need I say more? At 45 you don't just pop back the next day. Wednesday I was OK unless I had to sneeze. By Saturday I was still sore but not bad enough to talk myself out of it. The test went well for me, with only an occasional reminder from my ribs. Then it was time for breaking. I tried to do a speed break with one board. Whack, the board flies across the room. Once more. Whack, same thing. This time with deeper knuckle prints and a little blood on the board. We decided to try something else. Instead I broke three with a downward hammer and then three with spin back kick. What was one of those key words? Perserverence, yeah that's the one. I've got some work to do on hand techniques (and breakfalls and lots of other things). Anyway, we really do earn these belts, don't we? It seems whatever color the belt is, there is always a little black and blue involved. On a different note, I want to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Garcia for his inexhaustable patience with his students and his dedication to TaeKwonDo. Kamsa hamnida, Sabum.
