I will inquire with my >Grand Master Il Kwon Kim. (temporary first Dan)Tom My understanding of this was that there was only ONE 10th Dan in a system, although this would include the kwans. The 10th Dan was the Founder or current Headmaster of the system, esentially the Kwang Jang Nim (again, although this title is udes at the dojang/school level too). Also, there would only be ONE 9th Dan. This was the person who would become the next Headmaster. I do know that the WTF has testing through 9th Dan, but it seems more political than traditional. This version of 9th & 10th Dans seems valid to me from my Song Moo Kwan experience. I haven't heard any Song Moo Kwan members claiming anyone other than Byung Jick Ro as a 10th Dan or, for that matter, many claiming to be 9th Dans in Song Moo Kwan. Let me explain the situation a bit first. We are in a university club atmosphere. No permanent dojang (we use the university gym facilities). My instructor is also a student who attends the university. Due to the structure of the clubs here at university, there are "positions of power" namely, president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer. Ok, now that I've got the facts down, here's what's happened already. My instructor (who did not take an instructors course) is from Korea. He was brought up in the disciplinary structure that exists in Korea (schooling... much akin to the disciplinary requirements in MA dojangs.. ie higher belts should be respected, and lower belts should listen to what they say). A student has been practicing in Hae Dong Gumdo (a Sword MA) for the past few years. When this student began, my instructor was just beginning to teach the class, and was not very rigid in the disciplining the students (ie I am the Sah Bum Nim in class, and *John Doe* outside of class). He just said call me *John Doe*. Anyways, as circumstances have it, this student made it to 1st Gup, and has not been able to get their black belt due to the lack of proper testing facilities (and masters for that matter), but was given a black belt by my instructor for the interim. (This club is _very_ informal, and my instructor was actually taking the some of the same classes as this student). Now the problem is that my instructor would like to bring in some more discipline into the club, but my instructor is not the "club president"... this student is. Also this student is not very responsive to taking instruction because, IMO, he has let the "black belt" get to his head, and he now thinks that he is a black belt. I am not the only one in the class who disapproves of this student's rude behaviour in class (grunting excessively, cursing... during exercises). We feel that his behaviour is not respectful. I hope you can understand where I am coming from. My instructor also believes, and IMHO I too believe this, that this student only wants to learn the MA for beating someone else up. My question to you who read this, is what can we do about this situation??? The student is a very stubborn one that believes that the part of the form that the student is doing wrong was actually taught by my instructor, but what is more likely the case is that the student forgot what to do, made up a new maneuver, and believes that the instructor taught it. What my instructor plans on doing for now is to get a 1st Gup belt, and replace the student's belt with it. Then tell the student that there is nothing that the student can learn from the instructor anymore. Now there are many other factors to this equation that I could not possibly explain in one email, since this problem has been in the making for 3 years (the student was fine for the first year, in the second year, my instructor did not attend the class, and let the student teach the class, and in the third year... well that's this year...), it is difficult to explain it all at once. If ANY of you have any suggestions or even experiences that are akin to what we have... we would appreciate it very much. My instructor should be joining the list shortly, if not already... Martial Arts" Date: Mon, 27 Nov 2000 07:31:34 Subject: the_dojang: tournaments the bad and the inspiration Well I am home from another open tournament, the more I go to the more I loose my "taste" for them. At this one there were 2 Jr's competing in the new "modified Kick boxing" division that were knocked out and two instructors got into a brawl on the side lines also resulting in a knock out, a young girl got knocked clear off her feet via her opponents punch to the body in point sparring and several more "un-acceptable injuries :( (and people bug me saying that I should stop competing in breaking because it is too dangerous, the boards&bricks have never knocked me out) But, there was one moment that I just have to share, one young boy from the school where I used to train at, got a silver in his blue/brown point sparring division, now this may not sound too wonderful, but this talented youngster was a good 6 inches shorter than the other kids in his division and he is deaf and has to rely on body signals from his coach(who more often than not was located behind him). Neat kid a real inspiration! Continued Success, Sandy >>--------------------------> Director "Promotion of Women in the Arts-W.B.A. Webmaster-Gecko K.
