I am in charge of our local school but I don't normally have to assert that. I guess that's why I was a little uneasy about it at first; I am in uncharted waters as far as I'm concerned. However, I finally reached the decision and as soon as (or if) that person shows up in class, he will be informed of my decision. The only person whose opinion matters more than mine would be my GM's, but he is firmly behind whatever my judgement is. I totally agree that one's values should not be compromised. In the beginning I was worried about "What if he leaves" or "What if the other black belts don't agree with me". But as you said, he made his own choice and I will not waver from what I believe in, regardless of the consequences. Thank you again for the kind words. Yours is one of the many opinions I value on this list. It's nice to hear that there are others out there who share my convictions. Shaun M. I don't remember who wrote the article. It made reference to Tae'Kyon and the fact that it is now considered a Korean National Treasure and has been issued a registration number. I will try to find it as soon as I can. That is the reference that I used to qoute that Tae'Kyon translates to Smashing with the feet. If you know something more regarding this maybe you would post it on the list. Hi Dan, I really haven't done the research on this one, but I was talking to Michael Pederson (who trained in t'aekkyon in Korea and has done some good research on it), and he was saying that the Chinese characters for t'aekkyon have in the past been translated as "push shoulder." Stanley Henning says the Koreans mistranslated the term, but I think more research has to be done on the Korean side before we can say one way or another. The "true" translation of t'aekkyon remains unknown. Michael and I are both continuing to search for it. I'm pretty sure that "smashing with the feet" is not it. That is how the "t'ae" in "t'aekwondo" is normally translated, but you can't find it in the Korean dictionary, and when I looked up the Chinese characters associated with that version of "t'ae", what I came up with was "springboard" or "spring leg." Interesting, but not very helpful. Yet! Dan also wrote: It has been said that documents exist carrying the name Tatajuta Yoshida, within the Dai-Ito Ryu Aikijutsu records and this is the name that was given to none other than Grandmaster Choi, Yong Sul. In a number of interviews with Grandmaster Choi, this point was brought up. When asked if he accompanied Takeda on demonstrations Grandmaster Choi, stated that he did and went on to name the others that were with him on a demonstration in Hawaii. I must agree with Jeremy at this point. Does it matter? Was and is the system that Grandmaster Choi, shared with so many effective? The only thing that should matter at this point is your training. My reply: I might as well add my two cents in on this one as well. I think it does matter, because it is a way of appraising the techniques. You're perfectly right that if a technique is effective, it is not terribly important where it came from. What is important is appraising those techniques. If we bow to tradition and say that a technique MUST have been effective in the past because my instructor did it that way, then we are not continually refining our technique in the most efficient way possible. Note the proviso here! We are, of course, refining our technique by trying to make a traditional technique applicable in the "real world." But remember that "ars longa, vita brevis" (art is long, life is short). We should refine our technique in an efficient manner, unless ritual is more important to us than application. It is our responsibility, if we really want to learn how to fight as effectively as we can, to take a technique and either make it our own if it works, or toss it out and find a new one if it doesn't, keeping that old technique in the back of our heads in case we find a way to use it.
