See, it wasn't gained after Mr. Spok trained for years in a MA style that was 1,000's of years old only to discover it was a scant 50 years old and had no real combat applications so he decided to cross train in other MA's (that would seem to have very similar problems) to come up with the best techniques against any opponent, anywhere, any time. Nope, it's just a result of him being a Vulcan (and only 1/2 a Vulcan at that!). If that Vulcan grip had been a REAL Martial Art skill, I surely would have included it ;-). The NHA exists to service and benefit its members with prompt service, reasonable fees and traditional certification. History of the N.H.A. The Art of HanMooKwan was founded in Suwon, South Korea in 1944 and was one of the first styles officially recognized in 1966 when GrandMaster Ji Han Jae was working hard to unite under the name of Hapkido. The Founder of the HanMooKwan family is GrandMaster Yong Ki Song, who often traveled to Taegue to train with GrandMaster Yong Sool Choi. GrandMaster Song also trained and worked with GrandMaster Ji Han Jae as a member of the Presidential Security staff. On March 13th, 1997 in Seoul, South Korea GrandMaster Yong Ki Song officially founded the National HanMooKwan Association as the first fraternal organization to promote traditional Hapkido around the world. HanMooKwan is an officially recognized Hapkido system in Korea and is a member of the Korea Hapkido Federation. The NHA was established in response to the growing demand for authentic traditional Hapkido. While many Hapkido organizations outside of Korea provide mail order certification but offer no training support. The NHA will provide the technical support necessary to train people to master and grandmaster level world wide. The name HanMooKwan means Korean school of military arts. HanMooKwan is a unique style of Hapkido that specializes in weapons. November 28th 1998 the National HanMooKwan Association unified with several other KHF affiliates to form the National Hapkido Association providing better support world wide for its members. The NHA is the national governing body for Hapkido in America. Curriculum The NHA has a curriculum for everyone that wants to broaden their knowledge to enhance their teaching capabilities, or just for self development. Curriculum guidelines are available and the specific techniques are taught at the annual camp and seminars. You may order the guidelines by contacting the headquarters at 407-654-0555. White belt through black belt material can be taught in a two day seminar at you location or you can attend events in your region. Instructors who want private training may schedule weekend training sessions at the headquarters for a modest fee. I would like to present the following facts to help make this type of decision easier. First, The only HAPKIDO organization officially recognized by the Korean government is the Korea Hapkido Federation. The KHF President is Oh, Se Lim. Irrespective of loose claims or connections to Choi, Yong Sool, the KHF is the ONLY recognized Hapkido organization in Korea. There are a few, tiny organizations that would try to convince you other wise. When the organization was founded our name was the Korea Hapkido Association. The name was officially changed in 1984 because of political complications and a few copy cat organizations using a modified version of our name. It is true the Kido organization has recognition from the Korean government (as a Chinese martial art). The KHF will always be the only officially recognized Hapkido organization in Korea, the motherland of our art. The National Hapkido Association is the official member organization in the U.S. of the KHF. To be affiliated with the KHF in Korea, and to be eligible for KHF ranking and other certifications, you must be a member of the NHA. There are many fine instructors who are not affiliated with the KHF. However, they have an obligation to themselves and their students to belong to the appropriate, Legitimate Hapkido organization. I personally invite those of you who are considering membership to become a part of our family. You and your students will be glad that you did. I will be visiting the U.S. in the Spring and look forward to meeting you. Yours in Hapkido, GM Yong Ki Song ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Sun, 10 Dec 2000 12:13:28 PST Subject: the_dojang: Honor & Pussy > Uh, the MAN from U.N.C.L.E. was a little before my time (I just turned 30, > sorry). Interestingly, if you go back to some of the early Avengers episodes, you'll see Honor Blackman as Steed's partner, Mrs. Catherine Gale. Honor later appeared as one of the early Bond Girls as Pussy Galore in Goldfinger. Anyway, Honor was supposedly a Dan rank in Judo. Ray Terry raymail@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com ------------------------------ From: David Reed Date: Sun, 10 Dec 2000 11:44:06 -0800 Subject: the_dojang: Experience vs. Effectiveness I'd like to open a new thread. I'd be interested in getting the opinions of the members on how long they feel it takes to achieve the ability to effectively defend themselves. More specifically, how long does it take till there is some added capability, significant capability, expert capability. This includes mental, psychological, physical, and experiential factors. This is considering either an average male or female student in good health and average fitness - a generic person if you will so extremes or special cases are omitted. For example, if you had an average student in their 20's, 5'10" 160lb of average mental and physical makeup, how long till they could hold their own against a motivated attacker with the same makeup; how long till they could handle a larger, faster, more skilled, or armed opponent; how long till they could handle multiple attackers, special environments like ice or sudden darkness/light, etc? I know a number of you practice self defense curriculums beyond the traditional arts so it might be interesting to know what curriculum you base your estimate on. Is this one > of those things where I send in a video tape of me doing techniques? I bet > it doesn't reduce the fee though, does it? Damn, where do I sign up? Unfortunately, it has been my personal experience that (in some organizations) the GM is definitely not required to see anything (not even a video tape). In fact, when I did some of the testing for the GM, my recommendations (and that of their entire testing board) were totally ignored. Passing was apparently guaranteed with payment, even if the testing board recommends more study before promotion be granted. To make things worse, I witnessed testing applications were entire sections of requirements were blotted out because the (very capable) students "had not learned it yet". Yet, patience be ignored, I watched the same student receive his or her certificate. What a way to torpedo your own association's future, not to mention credibility. When I refused to participate in furter testing, my own students were recruited to conduct the test. At that point, it seemed ludicrous to require my students to travel long distances and pay exhorbitant fees to obtain certification. You win the bet about the fees remaining the same. Don't bother signing up, I'm sure you would not like it either! In all fairness, I should comment here that I have myself have promoted a student who, if someone did not know his background, would never pass the requirements of a regular test. In fact this student is not only mentally handicapped, he also was inflicted with Polio at a young age. Despite these enormous handicaps, he learned ALL the material, and not a single requirement was crossed out because "he had not learned it yet". While I recognized the limitations of this man, I never cut him any slack because of his disabilities. He did it all. He simply could not perform some things at the same level of expertise the average person could. I don't make any excuses for passing this person. Indeed, I am proud to say that the man learned enough good work habits and social skills to enable him to take care of his elderly mother. Being on a total disability pension, this is something he would never have been able to do without his training. BTW, the man's brother and sister ( a lawyer and a registered nurse) live in another city and don't bother with the elderly mom, and I had expected the mom to be admitted to a home for the aged long ago. To be very honest, I have had more joy out of passing this individual than I have from some of the "world champs" I promoted. I think he has all of the qualities I look for in a Black Belt and then some. It happens so many times that me and my family laugh about it everytime they say it, but it is also a good indicator of why you should practice legitimate Martial Arts down here.
