The tape was filmed in Germany at Dieter Knuttel's Abanico Video Productions (thanks Dieter!). Inayan Larga Mano is a long range style based on the longest of the swords of the Philippine Islands, the Kampilan. It is practiced with a long heavy ratan cane, usually about 40" in length. This length of heavy ratan approximates the length and weight of the kampilan sword. The tape is 42 mins long and really is excellently produced by Abanico. The settings used, camera angles employed, and high tech studio effects add to the joy of watching this video. Dieter does an excellent job of dubbing this English language version. I assume he does just as well on the German language version. :) I must admit that it was rather difficult for me to view the video. It was the first time I had 'seen' my good friend and instructor Mangisursuro Inay since his funeral. Suro, we miss you... The video does an excellent job of introducing the basics of Inayan Larga Mano. The flow of the video starts with an intro to the kampilan, shows how to determine what size ratan cane is appropriate for one to use in the practice of this style of Inayan, to the basics of the grip, stances, angles of attack (9), the various types of strikes (training, flow-through, pull, redondo, twirl, bounce, and energy), the striking exercises, counters, and drills. It ends with some applications of how one would employ the kampilan in a serious interpersonal encounter. If you're interested in learning the basics of how to use the kampilan or the basics of a long stick style (where long is ~40") then this is a good tape to obtain, view, and study. I was personally taught this system by Mangisursuro Inay and can vouch that it does a very good job of transferring the basic elements of this long range weapon style. Sorry, I do not have any info on how to order this tape, but perhaps Dieter or Jason will chime in with that info. ABANICO Video Productions is at http://www.abanico.de. I have two more videos by Mangisursuro Inay, also filmed at Abanico to review (thanks again Dieter). They are the PSNA system (Pressure Sensitive Nerve Areas) and the RKD system (Reactive Knife Defense). Yes, I am biased... these videos feature my late instructor and friend, but I think you'll enjoy them. He sent me a couple of his Bully Videos and they seem pretty good. Any opinions? Century just sent me an ad, but they tend to be pricey. I have also looked at the turtlepress.com website. Has anyone used video's from either place. Any other recommendations. Thanks alot. Here's my 2 cents worth on this topic. Sometimes we don't have a choice. The cowards usually don't assault anyone unless they have backup. The only striking one would in a situation like that would be in order to create an opening to run through. Two thoughts on this one. 1. Blast through the person you perceive to be the weakest link in the wall or circle around you and run. 2. Take out the meanest biggest one of the bunch (not really hard to do at all) and hopefully watch the others back down. I had an 8 year old female student a few years ago who after tkd class one evening went jogging around the track while her dad read a book. He looked up at one point and saw 8-9 boys, around age 10-12 surrounding her. As one came at her she side kicked him and knocked him down. Then one from behind grabbed her and she elbowed him into the ribs and he let go. At that time the dad arrived and broke it up. The next day at school one of the two she hit grabbed her and she counter grabbed him and put him in an arm bar and took him to the ground, never to be bothered again. If you aren't running, it's because someone has ahold of you, in which case, you're are grappling. Not if you are kicking and striking. Do you know how to fight in the clinch? Do you practice those skills? Do you know how to fight on the ground when you've been tackled? Do you practice those skills? I agree with the writer that we must train in all aspects of fighting, but I do not agree with what I read in the magazines "that 90% of all fights end up on the ground". Unless that means what has been m experience: one person (the loser or losers) ends up on the ground while the other (winner) ends up standing above him. Any self defense system that doesn't include spending at least 30% clinch fighting and groundfighting is built upon fantasy. Going to the ground can be the absolute worst thing one can do. I agree sometimes one is taken down and has no choice, so we train to get up fighting (fast). Do not stay on the ground and do "ground fighting". His partners will crack open your skull. Relying on such a system for self defense is akin to relying on the lottery for one's old age retirement. With all due respect, the odds ain't that bad......! Winning the lottery in Texas is one in 16 million! >> Anyway, no offense meant in any comments, just my 2 cents worth, and using the writers comments as an outline to do so. gary pieratt New CKC Web Page ------------------------------ From: Bernard G Redfield Date: Sun, 17 Dec 2000 10:22:30 -0500 Subject: the_dojang: Myung Seok Seo Can anyone help me locate books or videos by Myung Seok Seo?? he put out a video series on traditional TSD Hyungs a while back and I can't seem to find them or him, he was in Maryland last I heard but cannot locate him tyo find out about the books or vids he has done, I have been told he included some rare forms. thanks Bernard ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Sun, 17 Dec 2000 8:05:14 PST Subject: the_dojang: . ------------------------------ End of The_Dojang-Digest V7 #778 ******************************** It's a great day for Taekwondo!
