It appears that most of the reviews are from associated companies who have a financial interest in it. I assume most of us got all the flyers from them in the mail. The retail price is around $80 and the wholesale price is around $40. With that said, the fellow is a very good writer. Excellent command of the English language. The history section is very good. He even goes over the history of the major hapkido organizations and the original hapkido leaders. The technique section irritates me. The pictures are way to small. Can't see any detail without my reading glasses and it gives me a headache to study the pictures for any length of time. But I suppose that is an age thing. I literally compared it to Dr. Kimm's hapkido bible which still is, in my opinion, a better work product. For me, Dr. Kimm's pictures are the right size and the sequence of events showing a technique are done much better. However, some friends who are younger like the pictured sections of Marc's book. My martial art library takes up an entire bookcase and the collection started about 25 years ago. My favorites still remain, Dr. Kimm He Young's Hapkido Bible and Philosophy of Masters as well as the written sections of Lee Joo Bang's Hwarando 3 volume set which has been out of print for a long time now. Marc Tedeschi new book is worth the wholesale price, but not retail price. Just my opinion... Jere R. Hilland www.geocities.com/hapkiyukwonsul PS. It actually got above freezing yesterday but a new front hit last night and it is snowing. Looks like a white Christmas. Don't expect to see the temperature above freezing till Spring. Turtle Press, who published the book just recently, stated in their catalog that they had a limited amount of the hardcover editions, and then the paperback. It's good that there is finally an English version of this book out. It's another that is on my list to get soon. JB Lee's 3-book series is back in print now. Or at least another production run was done a couple of years ago and they then went back on sale again. Are you looking for anything in particular? You may want to check out Panther and World Martial Arts. Panther tends to be less "pricey", but WMA tends to be of higher quality production and a little more cutting edge in terms of material. Check them out at: www.panthervideo.com www.groundfighter.com Also, check out the video offerings from the Straight Blast Gym. Very good material, and they have some good package deals. www.straightblastgym.com If you're looking for TKD videos then Turtle Press should be a good place to look. Unique Publications also has some TKD sets if I'm not mistaken...not sure about their URL. Panther has several TKD sets. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ From: ABurrese@aol.com Date: Sun, 17 Dec 2000 12:56:46 EST Subject: the_dojang: Re: Multiple attacker - grappling >>Any self defense system that doesn't include spending >>at least 30% clinch fighting and groundfighting is >>built upon fantasy. Relying on such a system for >>self defense is akin to relying on the lottery for >>one's old age retirement. I'm not disagreeing that clinch fighting and groundfighting are important, and they should be included in a person's self defense training. I personally think clinch fighting, or in-fighting as I prefer to call it is extemely valuable. Elbows, knees, headbutts and the like are very important to learn and practice. When it comes to ground fighting, you will hear a lot of different things. "90% of all fights go to the ground, so you better know BJJ" etc. Well, there are those out there that don't agree with the 90% rule, and while I have hit the ground and so have my opponents, I don't think 90% of the fights I have been in have gone to the ground, and definitely did not go into a situation where BJJ or similar art would have been the way to go. In an actual encounter, I don't want to be on the ground in the guard, mount, or any other BJJ or wrestling type hold. I have one goal if I get put to the ground, and that is to get back up as fast as I can. I will hit, kick, claw, maim and anything else I have to do get away from the person so I can get back up. Getting kicked in the head a few times when I was on the ground with another guy helped me learn this. (and I was winning with the guy on the ground, hense his buddy coming over to help with the boot to my head. I'm still glad he didn't stomp down on a joint, rather than kick me like he did) In my new video, I don't do much on the ground, because for self-defense, I don't want to be there! You shouldn't either. Don't get me wrong, I like to grapple on the ground. Thad and I have some great matches throwing each other around and trying to get each other to submit. But in a fight, I don't think you should be there. Do whatever you can to get away and get up. Yes, you might go down, but don't stay there!
