There are a few people whose contribution on that other Net I truly enjoyed and yours were right up there at the top. I'm glad you elected to join in and hope to hear from you more. My experience here has been very satisfying and the exchange of information on and off-line has been easy-going supportive and productive. Can't hardly ask for much more than that. I was referred to Dakin for additional information regarding the Tree so that I wouldn't necessarily have to reinvent the wheel. Using FAMILY TREE MAKER is a little more versatile than taping something together and I suspect it will allow for SOME flexibility in tracking the origins of Hapkido. The fact that the previous generations hopped around from teacher to teacher like fleas on a hotplate does not make the job easier, but I suppose it underscores the need to try. I recently contacted a school in SC titled WORLD MOO SOOL KWAN and received a very nice reply from the owner there. However, it was not the Moo Sool Kwan associated with GM-s Kim and Park and its easy to see how people could get confused. BTW: To anyone reading in--- The only authentic Moo Sool Kwan I have found has been through GM Parks' school in Missouri. If anyone knows of other related schools it certainly would help the effort. Please, do not be fooled with some of the rhetoric out there regarding Yudo's "history". Yudo IS Judo...nothing more, nothing less. Technically, there's practically no difference between the two. As far competition, there's probably more stress on competition in your average Yudo school than in the average Judo school...but this emphasis will vary from school to school. The emphasis on competition among Yudo players is evident in their heavy emphasis on tachi-waza. Throws win competitions in the modern era, not groundwork. For this reason, their ne-waza tends to be a little weaker than the average Judoka...again, this varies from player to player and from school to school. All those Judo competitor's that Korea sends to the Olympics? Yep, they're Yudo players. Same game with a different name. It's unfortunate that some Yudo practicioner's don't give credit to the true parent art...Judo. I like to think that Yudo's pseudo-history and it's perpetuation is the result of passing along bad information. Unfortunately, somewhere in the past this bad information was "born" from someone telling outright lies regarding Yudo's history and it's affiliation with Judo. Some points to keep in mind: 1. It's no coincidence that the term "Yudo" is almost identical to the term "Judo". 2. It's no coincidence that the two arts are almost technically identical. 3. Judo can trace it's lineage to a real and verifiable historical figure...Jigoro Kano. 4. Yudo can't do this. Instead we're given the same old party line about "Lost arts being rekindled". It's hogwash. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ From: RDNHJMS@aol.com Date: Wed, 27 Dec 2000 14:19:42 EST Subject: the_dojang: Myung, Jae Ok and HJMS Bruce, GM Myung Jae Ok is the founder of Hoi Jeon Moo Sool (Circular Martial Art), he is also the twin brother of the late GM Myung Jae Nam (Intl Hapkido Federation). The two brothers both studied under GM Ji in the late 50's and early 60's. GM Myung Jae Ok also studied Kong Soo Do, obtaining a 5th DAN by 1965. They were both key to the formation and administration of the IHF. However, around 1986 the two brothers had a parting of the ways. No one has been able to explain to me what happened, so I have determined that it's none of my business. GM Myung then formed the World Hoi Jeon Moo Sool Federation. Many of the senior Korean black belts in the IHF were his students, and they followed him to his new organization. I was with an instructor who was part of this transition, therefore I also became HJMS. If you look at the techniques, they are virtually identical to the original IHF techniques, but placed in a different order, i.e. all arm bars in a set (vice 10 different techniques against a wrist grab). One of the senior instructors in HJMS is Kang Kyo Sig, my instructor that I trained with in the middle east for many years. My other instructor in IHF/HJMS was Lee Ki Dae, who sadly was killed in a car accident a coupe of years ago. GM Myung leads a very traditional lifestyle, and only travels from his dojang normally to train with his senior instructors. For those of you that have met and trained with him (like Mike Tomlinson), I'm sure you would say that nobody moves like he does. GM Myung is scheduled to visit me again in March 01 to continue my training. I had many calls from IHF members following GM Myung Jae Nam's death inquiring as to how they may join Myung Jae Ok's HJMS. Normally I just refer them directly to the GM, but I know what his reply is: Sure, everyone is welcome. Here's your white belt, when do you want to start training. I think his most valuable lessons are about patience. I am interested in receiving input from parents and kids who have trained together. Specifically, I am interested in whether they trained in the same or different classes, the advantages they perceived in training as a family, any disadvantages they perceived and any recommendations that they might have for new families about to begin training together. For families who have trained for an extensive amount of time, I would like to know what impact you feel it has had on the family....did any of the kids (or parents) drop out of training over time (and for what reasons).....did training impact family relationships and if so, how? How did family members react to rank differences within the family? I'd really appreciate your input. P.S. I'm looking at a follow-up article on the impact of taekwondo training on sibling relationships, so I'd also like to hear from siblings who have trained together, even if you did not train with you parents. How they calim to be different is that they follow Dr. Kano's Kodokan Judo and not the changes Judo has seen in the last 50 or so years. Yes? The ability to do those essential elements is a different story. Unlike moving a house, I have seen multiple people with the the capability of doing what I suggested.
