I currently train under Master (Sung Su) Kim's Australian Hapkido Association and previously trained a little while with his brother Master Peter (Sung Do) Kim who headed the International Hapkido College - Master Peter I understand had trained a lot of Hapkido instructors across south east Asia and also had International Hapkido College clubs in Germany and the UK. I understand both Master Matthew and Master Peter were trained in Korea by Master Il Ong Ouh. I'm looking for information on Master Ouh and hopefully have spelled his name the right way. Can anyone help ? ... specificially I am very interested in Master Ouh's background, who he taught, and who taught him. Yours in the Arts. James Clark Sydney, Australia ... I guess I prefer to be a greybeard then any of the others. They all have negative conotations for me. Regarding Nuprin, an engineer visiting from Japan was struck with a wrenched back, his first. Like most back people I recommended alternating heat and cold as well as Ibupropen. The ibp in Japan is apparently very expensive; he was surprised at how well it worked. I don't believe he had ever tried it before. As for me I take too much of it. Visited a school in the LA area while I'm visiting my sister in law. Whatched a kids class. I also was surprised to see a number of hapkido school in the phone book. Not as many as Taekwondo but quite a few. As I'm getting back into the sport I'm only a few pounds above when I quit so it's not too bad. Just started strength training to compensate for the age effect. - -Lee Tucson (writing from Monrovia, CA) ------------------------------ From: "Craig Stovall" Date: Wed, 27 Dec 2000 20:27:55 -0600 Subject: the_dojang: Regarding U.S. Yudo Ray wrote: "Actually, the US Yudo Assoc. is very much in the open about being Judo. How they calim to be different is that they follow Dr. Kano's Kodokan Judo and not the changes Judo has seen in the last 50 or so years. Yes?" If the U.S. Yudo Association has taken that position, then I commend them. I'm unfamiliar with that particular organization's programs and doctrines. In fairness, my comments were not aimed directly at them, although I can see how I could have left that impression. I should have been more specific...my mistake. My comments were directed more towards some of the outrageous claims we hear coming from some Yudo camps. Some have claimed that Yudo is a purely Korean art, totally separate from the art of Judo. I have even heard some claim that Yudo/Judo was invented in Korea, and then later exported to Japan where it fourishes under the auspices of the Kodokan, et al. I'll have to check out that U.S. Yudo website. Did anybody post the URL? I'm interested in their take on Kano's original "vision", and how they see themselves following Kano's legacy as opposed to the Kodokan and others. Sounds interesting as I am in full support of getting away from Judo's heavy emphasis on competition in the modern era, and getting back to it's original intent...the forging of balance and harmony in human beings through physical education. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ From: foxdragon@cuttingedge.net Date: Wed, 27 Dec 2000 20:25:27 -0600 Subject: the_dojang: Re: The_Dojang-Digest V7 #800 the_dojang-owner@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com wrote: > From: MissIllona@aol.com > Date: Wed, 27 Dec 2000 13:49:30 EST > Subject: the_dojang: Re: The_Dojang-Digest V7 #799 > > In a message dated 12/27/00 9:32:05 AM Pacific Standard Time, > the_dojang-owner@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com writes: > > << For what it's worth, last night (12/26) I taught both classes at your > dojang > (the scheduled instructor was sick). >> > > MY DOJO ? Being a Grey Beard I have found taking two aspirin every morning after a good work out truely seems to greatly reduce, if not eliminate that morning after stiffness. I always take one a day just to protect against heart problems and after a really good work out I throw in an extra for stiffness. If any of you have other suggestions for dealing with morning after stiffness I along with other Grey Beards would like to hear them. For all the "Mature" ladies out there, please do not think I am counting you all out by using the term "Grey Beard", if you saw me even at 47 it fits very well. Another question for my fellow "Grey Beards" and "Mature" ladies out there. Do you feel down and tired if you miss a class? Do you get almost a high when you are fully warmed up and sparring or working on techniques? One last question, do you find a joy in working with the younger students? I do. Ray - ------------------------------------------------- Korea Approves New Kwon for Yudo On Christmas Eve, the Korea Judo Association approved a present for traditional Korean military art practitioners, the registration of a new Yudo kwon. The kwon, Chung Tong Yudo or Original Style of Judo, is the successor to the Republic of Korea Yudo Association. The ROK Yudo Association was originally formed in 1935 with the approval=20 of Jigoro Kano, Founder of Judo, obtaining its present name after Korea=B9s liberation. In the years following Kano=B9s death, his students changed what he=20 had taught turning Judo from a virtually complete system of self-defense to a=20 martial sport, something which Kano himself strongly opposed. At the urging of the Korean government, a number of different organizations=20 were formed to support the practice of this sport, a sport in which the Koreans have=20 demonstrated themselves among the best in the world since taking the mat in international competition. Meanwhile, the ROK Yudo association continued t= o practice the art as Kano intended it to be taught, as a means of self-defense. =20 In 1998, the ROK Yudo Association authorized a new organization to be formed for the purposes of: revising the technical practice of the art, based upon traditional principles but incorporating recent scientific and technical findings;=20 establishing a standardized curriculum to meet the needs of traditional practitioners for professional education, as well as technical training, in a format=20 consistent with emerging multi-national standards of academic excellence; to=20 develop the base for an international organization supporting the worldwide study=20 and practice of Yudo as a complete system of self-defense, based upon the art as=20 founded by Jigoro Kano but incorporating the technical, scientific and educational advances since the death of the Founder; and, in a self-renewin= g traditional Korean military art. Chung Tong Yudo is a military art in that it is=20 intended strictly for self-defense with no sporting aspects, is restricted in its study=20 and practice to adults of good reputation, and is grounded in the timeless ethic of=20 the classical warrior - Duty, Honor, Country. This action by the Board of Directors of the Korea Judo Association, Korea's=20 representative to the International Judo Federation, ensures the survival o= f the=20 historical lineage of Judo as an art firmly established in Korea by the Founder of=20 that art, long before it was modified to its current form as an Olympic sport. It also=20 brings to full circle the evolution of what started as Kano-ryu Jujutsu, since the new=20 kwon incorporates the rank requirements of the Korea Hapkido Federation fulfilling them whenever applicable with traditional Yudo techniques. This decision by the Korea Judo Association demonstrates bold leadership and=20 a clear vision that, when it comes to Judo in Korea, both the traditional art and the=20 contemporary sport are alive and well, and enjoying mutual respect and collegiality. ________________________ For further information, please contact: Prof. Joseph F.
