I have the good fortune to have a chiropractor who is 4th dan in the same art I practice. He knows exactly what kind of punishment I'm subjecting my body to (not that he approves, "Let the young boys do the falling!"), and keeps me in good working order. Without having my doc for backup I would be much more hesitant to take the risks and falls I do to keep current and improve my skills. NCHVAMC" Date: Fri, 29 Dec 2000 08:35:07 -0600 Subject: the_dojang: RE: The_Dojang-Digest V7 #803 I was browsing through the latest issue of TAEKWONDO TIMES and found that GM Ji had promoted another individual to 8th Dan. No. I don't want to go there. But it did give me pause for thought about the things that I wrote concerning Carstens' question about "what is Hapkido". Again, I apologize if my response was a bit technical, but I stand by my definitions. What I didn't address is the role of individuals who are grand-fathered into an organization from various backgrounds. So lets say that a person is practicing an art that falls within the parameters I shared earlier-to wit: 1.) Owes a significant portion of the curriculum to a Daito-ryu heritage 2.) Owes the balance of its heritage to Korean martial tradition 3.) Honors the Three Pillars of Hapkido uniformly throughout its curriculum. Now, said individual, perhaps of the Moo Sool Kwan tradition joins GM Ji's Sim Moo Hapkido organization and makes a few ranks. Personally I would still identify such an individual as Moo Sool Kwan regarding their lineage. But heres' the thing. What about the MA practitioner who attended classes at Jim's Independent TKD School and Pistol-cleaning Emporium and received gen-U-wine certs in Hapkido signed by Jim--- himself! So GM Ji, or GM Seo or any of the other legit GM takes the blighted-and-be-knighted into their organization, and now the product of an independent education begins to represent himself as descended from GM Choi through GM Ji, or Kimm or whoever. I know this is not exactly the original question Carsten and I were addressing, but I have yet to see an issue of TKD or BB and not catch some new announcement regarding an individual promoted to the rarified atmospheres of upper Dan rank. I also know that there has been some discussion on the Net about individuals who bounce from organization to organization to accrue rank. So from THIS prespective let me ask Carstens' question yet again--- What is Hapkido?
