At the end of our last class Doju-nim Kimm challenged us to explain the meaning of holding his hand up displaying five fingers. Nobody had a clue, and he stated "maybe with another year training, you will understand". He then asked, with his hand open, "how many?". Then he closed his fist and asked "how many?", some people responded one, some said five. Obviously neither was correct. Does anybody have a solution for this Zen puzzle. My first assumption was that it related to the five senses, or perhaps it means something as simple as goodbye. I'm perplexed, if anyone could "enlighten" us, it would be appreciated, or maybe with another year training we can draw our own conclusion. It may be relevant that this question was proceeded by a lecture concerning "logic vs. instinct" kamsahamnida, Chris H. Guess I was a good girl because Santa granted my wish. I am one of a few of Master Whelan's students who are looking forward to February's Seminar. Guess if I have to turn 40, I might as well hit the mat with a bang (ok a slap out), ha, ah. ------------------------------ From: ChunjiDo@aol.com Date: Fri, 29 Dec 2000 12:17:48 EST Subject: the_dojang: Re: baby alert i'm gonna be offline for several days. the baby is on his way. i'll update you folks as soon as we know the plumbing and dimensions. :) melinda Chajonshim Martial Arts Supply http://www.chajonshim.com Proud Sponsor of the 10th Annual 2001 US Open Taekwondo Championships ------------------------------ From: "Sims, Bruce W. NCHVAMC" Date: Fri, 29 Dec 2000 12:12:48 -0600 Subject: the_dojang: RE: GM Myung, Jae Ok follow-up Dear Rick: Just a quick follow-up to your contribution regarding GM Myung, Jae Ok. I was getting a bit confused about how one would chart the transition you mentioned. If I understood correctly, you said that both GM Myung and his brother Myung Jae-nam studied under GM Ji. Obviously some people stayed with Myung, Jae-nam (International Hapkido Federation) and others went with Myung, Jae Ok (World Hoi Jeon Moo Sool Federation). Following that, were both Kyo Sig Kang and Ki Dae Lee students of Jae Ok Myung? Do you see yourself as a direct student of GM Myung or a successor to M Kang (or Lee? or both?) Is the use of " Moo Sool" in the organizations title used in its broadest sense of "martial techniques" or it meant to bespeak some relationship with the philosophy or biomechanics of the Moo Sool Kwan? Do the biomechanics of the techniques of your organization reflect any of the efforts of GM Myung Jae-nam to modify Hapkido with material from Aikido?
