It's still the same hand whether all five fingers are separate or "united" into a fist, but only when united can they attack or defend. It's like a family; it has all these individual parts, and yet as a collective object, a "family," it is stronger. So if he wants an answer, tell him it is both five and one. One fist, made from five united fingers. - -Sarah Pride- P.S. Hey, guess what? Friday before Christmas I tested for, and received, my brown belt in TKD! It's been a little over a year since I started TKD, and there is no possible way I want to stop. My school's week of Christmas break is torture, though yes I have been practicing at home. ------------------------------ From: "Rudy Timmerman" Date: Mon, 01 Jan 2001 03:30:49 -0500 Subject: the_dojang: New Year Greetings everyone: Just wanted to wish all of you a Happy and fruitful New Year. First, let me say that I do not hold rank in yudo nor do I claim any knowledge of the art. I studied it in college only. We inherited the Texas A&M University Self Defense club from Park Jung Soo who held both taekwondo and yudo rank. His higher dan was in yudo. A very strong man and a serious player, Master Park never discussed history, but he did teach the techniques using the Japanese judo terminology, interestingly he never used the term judo, only yudo. This was in grad school, so it must have been around 1984. Jere R. At least as much as a person can be who works in the IT field. You know, the funny (ironic) thing is..that's what the I LOVE YOU virus did, and the Pretty Park virus and a few others...they emailed a copy of themselves to everyone in your address book...simple enough, right? It slammed email servers everywhere... just like these "warnings" do. I hope my tone doesn't come off as confrontational or anything other than educational...wish me luck. Here goes. No email can wipe out your hard drive. It's just text that displays on the screen. Text will not destroy your hardware or your software. Now, attachments are another story. Those can be executable (ie. run as a program on your machine). These can do almost anything without your knowledge, so open attachments with great care. Chances are you can get through another day without a bunch of hamsters dancing on your screen. The surest way to be safe is never open executable attachments (files that end in .exe or .vbs or .bat) and disable HTML formatting for your email program. This is because html formatting includes javascript, which can execute code on your machine. Another great rule of thumb is NEVER pass on virus warnngs without verifying their accuracy. As I mentioned above, a lot of these viruses act by emailing copies of themselves to all your friends...and that's all they do. So, what's the difference between everyone getting emailed a copy of a virus or everyone getting emailed a warning about a virus hoax? It's still needless traffic which increases the general lag on the net. The place to check it out is http://www.symantec.com/avcenter They commonly have all the pertinent information about a virus as soon as it hits the wild. If the virus someone just emailed you about isn't listed there, it's probably a hoax....especially if it's an email that's going to wipe your hard drive out. :o) Sorry this was so long, but it's a topic that I take very seriously. The warnings about viruses that don't exist are as much of a menace as the real viruses. I thought that since our esteemed moderator let the "warning" pass, I'd better speak up. :o) Happy Real New Millenium!!
