I only had a problem with the velcro straps staying put. The headgear is excellent, but weird to wear. I have also used the very cumbersom 'Redman' suit by macho. Each suit will cost close to $1000.00 or more. Unless you have the cash to put out for at least 2 of them (you will need a partner). I do not suggest the Redman for anything other than being a human punching bag or for baton/escrima stuff. To realistically apply techniques, you need a certain amount of mobility that the redman/hitman/bluemax/fist/etc. suits cannot give. In my law enforcement programs, badguys(instructors) wear suits of our own designs to meet our personal needs. The officers do not wear anything but their duty gear.(we go pretty hard, but we never attack all out unless the student is suited up as well). I use the same suits for scenario training during MA class as well. The important thing to realize is that to suit up and 'spar' with an opponent in class using whatever rules you decide, is different than creating a situation(scenario) where the entire fight process is included. It is great to go a few rounds with the gear on, and the sensations are better than just allowing contact to a hogu. Either way, sparring or scenarios will better prepare you for actual contact. The key is to make the sessions as 'real' as possible. Include lights, sound, multiple attackers, protected persons, extreme insulting foul language, inert pepper spray (we use real stuff in the LE scenarios), toss in training weapons and obstacles...anything to make is realistic. This winter, we have even been training in the slippery mud and pouring rain during midnight shifts...much different from the dojang floor. OK...the equipment I use: Century Warrior headgear($15), with clear hockey faceshield-used($15). Century Elite chest guard w/spine protector($25). Cloth forearm guards-2 pair-one for upper arm, one for forearm($15). Hockey elbow pads-used($10)new($25+). Velcro strap to hold headgear on to chest protector shoulder straps($1). Boxing Gloves/Fingerless Grapple gloves/street hockey gloves($20). Adidas tuck-under groin protector-guys do NOT scimp in this!($25). Street hockey/ice hockey shorts-depending on contact level-used($25)new($60+). Big thick volleyball kneepads($10)/or construction hard plasic covered kneepads($25). Sew the kneepads to the cloth shinguards($10)or get hockey/baseball shin protectors($35+). Wear normal hightop basketball shoes, or foam dip boots over TKD shoes. I also throw on a plain hockey jersey to cover it all up. I did well over 100 scenario fights this past year without an injury. One of my instructors damaged a thumb wearing grapple gloves...sew the thumbs of whatever glove to the index finger. You could get the setup for under $200. Most of the costs are wholesale for the MA stuff, and many dojangs have some items already. Hockey swap meets or resale shops always have great deals. After trying the used stuff, I upgraded to new...I would rather have only my sweat in my stuff. On my humble website, I have pics of the suit in action. Why?? People don't wear them on the streets... Heck, do you practice in a dojang? Why?? Why not just show up in your street/work cloths or maybe in a suit with a bunch of friends and just beat the snott out of each other in the parking lot? Isn't that more realistic? While I'm thinking about it, do you practice shooting people, or do you have anyone shoot at you? Why not, isn't that what they do in the streets? Have you ever worked out with a sword? Why?? People don't carry around swords anymore... There are people who take different arts, whether fencing, gumdo, karate, taekwondo, tangsoodo, boxing, etc. for the sheer enjoyment of it, to learn a skill, to get/stay in shape, sport, hobby, or whatever. I have no intention of getting into a fight, and I don't look for one. But unlike something like say gymnastics, if I do ever get into a situation with an attacker, then my skills will help me to be better off in that situation than if I had never begun training in martial arts. Many people choose martial arts for various reasons, it's not only about fighting or preparing to get attacked, but sport, exercise, artistic expression, self improvement, etc. ------------------------------ From: "Anne Skjold" Date: Wed, 10 Jan 2001 15:05:29 -0600 Subject: the_dojang: Personal Safety tips for women I thought this would be a beneficial email for all my female friends, family and fellow Martial Artists to read about. I hope no one ever has to use this knowledge but you just never know. Better to be safe than sorry. ----- Forwarded by a friend: Interesting insight! I just finished taking the most amazing self-defense class, sponsored by Shandwick, and I wanted to share some really valuable info with you before it goes out of my head. The guy who taught the class has a female friend who was attacked last year in the parking garage at Westport Plaza in St. Louis one night after work and taken to an abandoned house and raped. He started a women's group and began teaching these classes soon after. This guy is a black belt in karate and trains twice a year with Steven Segall. He and the others in this group interviewed a bunch of rapists and date rapists in prison on what they look for and here's some interesting facts: The #1 thing men look for in a potential victim is hairstyle. They are most likely to go after a woman with a ponytail, bun, braid or other hairstyle that can easily be grabbed. They are also likely to go after a woman with long hair. Women with short hair are not common targets. The second thing men look for is clothing. They will look for a woman who's clothing is easy to remove quickly. The #1 outfit they look for is overalls because many of them carry scissors around to cut clothing and on overalls the straps can be easily cut. They also look for women on their cell phone, searching through their purse or doing other activities while walking because they are off guard and can be easily overpowered. The time of day men are most likely to attack and rape a woman is in the early morning, between 5 and 8:30 a.m. The number one place women are abducted from/attacked at is grocery store parking lots. Number two is office-parking lots/garages. Number three is public restrooms. The thing about these men is that they are looking to grab a woman and quickly move her to a second location where they don't have to worry about getting caught. Only 2% said they carried weapons because rape carries a 3-5 year sentence but rape with a weapon is 15-20 years. If you put up any kind of a fight at all, they get discouraged because it only takes a minute or two for them to realize that going after you isn't worth it because it will be time-consuming. These men said they would not pick on women who have umbrellas, or other similar objects that can be used from a distance, in their hands. Keys are not a deterrent because you have to get really close to the attacker to use them as a weapon. So, the idea is to convince these guys you're not worth it. Several defense mechanisms he taught us are: * If someone is following behind you on a street or in a garage or with you in an elevator or stairwell, look them in the face and ask them a question, like what time is it, or make general small talk, I can't believe it is so cold out here, we're in for a bad winter. Now you've seen their face and could identify them in a lineup, you lose appeal as a target. * If someone is coming toward you, hold out your hands in front of you and yell Stop or Stay back! Most of the rapists this man talked to said they'd leave a woman alone if she yelled or showed that she would not be afraid to fight back. Again, they are looking for an EASY target. If you carry pepper spray (this instructor was a huge advocate of it and carries it with him wherever he goes,) yelling I HAVE PEPPER SPRAY and holding it out will be a deterrent. * If someone grabs you, you can't beat him or her with strength but you can by outsmarting him or her. If they grab your wrist, pull your wrist back so your hand is in waving position (palm facing forward) and twist it toward yourself and pull your arm away. It is hard to hold onto wrist bones that are moving in that way. They stumble toward you and you stumble back, so you can use that momentum to bring the same out and backhand them with your knuckles in the forehead, nose or teeth. * If you are grabbed around the waist from behind, pinch the attacker either under the arm between the elbow and armpit or in the upper inner thigh HARD. One woman in a class this guy taught told him she used the underarm pinch on a guy who was trying to date rape her and was so upset she broke through the skin and tore out muscle strands - the guy needed stitches. Try pinching yourself in those places as hard as you can stand it; it hurts. * After the initial hit, always go for the groin. I know from a particularly unfortunate experience that if you slap a guy's balls (sorry to be graphic) it is extremely painful. You might think that you'll piss the guy off and make him want to hurt you more, but the thing these rapists told our instructor is that they want a woman who will not cause a lot of trouble. Start causing trouble, and he's out of there. * When the guy puts his hands up to you, grab his first two fingers and bend them back as far as possible with as much pressure pushing down on them as possible. The instructor did it to me without using much pressure, and ended up on my knees and both knuckles cracked audibly. Of course the things we always hear still apply. Always be aware of your surroundings, take someone with you if you can and if you see any odd behavior, don't dismiss it, and go with your instincts. You may feel a little silly at the time, but you'd feel much worse if the guy really was trouble. Please forward this to any woman you know, it's simple stuff that could save her life. ------------------------------ From: MissIllona@aol.com Date: Wed, 10 Jan 2001 18:18:31 EST Subject: the_dojang: Re: Coaches << Are the best athletic coaches also the best players? >> I have argued this one till the cows come home ... look at alot of the boxers managers and coaches ... they may have been fighters back when they were younger ... but the ability to pass on that knowledge is given to few. Understanding the body is important and alot of people don't even think about it. How do the joints move and in what direction ? How important is the hip in what you are doing? What kind of training would best work the legs or the arms or the waist or the back, etc ? What would make them quicker ? Some like to watch people and figure these things out ... and then teach it to others ... others just like to go in there and beat people up. I want someone who is a thinker, a people person, a person of experience in my corner when I am learning something. Not just someone who can fight good. Know what I mean ? I am not good at words and probably put this incorrectly so if you can say it better ... please someone do. The Pacific Northwest AAU TKD Association along with our group will be sponsoring the event. We will be changing the event to a double elimination or consolation match format. This is to provide every competitor a greater chance at medaling as well ensure at least two sparring matches for everyone. If you are coming from out of state, we'll try to assist with housing arrangements. Please call early (253-536-1146). Calling close to the event may conflict with setting up the tournament and decrease our opportunity to find lodging for you. This is our the eleventh year and fourth year conducting this event as a AAU TKD National Qualifier. Seventy-five percent of our referees are nationally certified and work hard to make the event fair to all competitors. At angelfire.com/ma/nwtkd, we have posted tournament information under "Links". If you have any difficulty accessing, please call or email me on britttkd@aol.com. We are still developing the website, so please call if something doesn't work or is missing. In conjunction with the tournament, we will invite Mr. Ireno Fargas Coach of the Spanish National TKD Team to conduct a sparring seminar Friday, April 27 and be in attendance on Saturday April 28th to talk about his training methods. If you have interest in the sparring seminar, please call for information. If you have any other questions or need further information, do not hesitate to call. If there is a China Town nearby try to find the Chinese patent formula, Yin Qiao Pian (San) (Honeysuckle and Forsythia (Pill) or Powder). The formula is used to release exterior wind-heat. If there is nasal or sinus congestion get Bi Yan Pian (Open the Nose Pill). These two can be taken simultaneously. Take Yin Qiao for no more than 7 days as it can lead to what is called Spleen Qi Deficiency if taken long term. The herbs in this formula is very cold and can damage the digestive enviroinment. Bi Yan Pian can be taken PRN (when neccessary). After 7 days start taking Yu Ping Feng San (Jade Wind Screen Powder/Pill). This formula is used to satbilize the exterior and the lungs (support the immune system and prevents invasion of wind-cold/heat) can and be taken long term. I put my patients on this formula if there are susceptible to colds and flus during the winter months. Keep the lower back warm to protect the Ming Men (Life Gate-Fire).
