The posts on weights were for the most part "gym lore" and not reflective of scientific conditioning principles. For example, you do not need to work until failure to get a training effect. Nor is there a great relationship that can be generalized about sets, reps, and weight. It depends, based on actual scientific research, to be specifically related to your muscle fiber type, place in your training macrocycle, etc. So please, if you aren't a certified trainer, please keep the myths to yourself. People will assume you know what you are talking about and take the bad advice. I'm certain no one on the list would purport to give advice about a martial art in which they had no formal training. If you are looking for good advice see a trainer. Alternately, egroups.com has a martial arts conditioning list moderated by one of the most experienced professional trainers around, Charles Staley. Go there for insight. If you are really interested, get certified. There are even certifications oriented to martial artists featuring how to create workouts for a variety of martial arts and events. Ummm... Yes, of course. I like staying healthy and I'll continue to get a flu shot, every year. Why it is my favorite activity every October! However, one time I did walk under a ladder and the very next month I lost my job and my marriage, but more importantly I lost my new BMW 7-series. Funakoshi Sensei advises that Karate (martial arts) can be taught for self improvement purposes and/or self defense skills. If you are teaching the martial way (mu-do), I would say the name of the art, the moves, Kata, poomse, hyung, etc. are only parts of the vehicle to self improvement. If you are claiming to teach martial science (mu-sul) for the purposes of self defense then some live cqb skills would be required to offer any realistic advice about effectiveness. One could of course attempt to simulate a cqb environment with less rules and more padding (ala Jeet Kune Do Sparring). But, IMVHO some live speed, unplanned responses must be incorporated in the training regime to be able to "speak from experience" about the effectiveness of a particular technique in battle. Of course, players who practice kwan je sul and kup so (joint manipulations and vital/pressure points) have even greater challenges, as we usually include some rules (tapping out, no head kup so, not activating two kup so at once, etc..) and safety precautions (mats) to allow our training partners to remain reusable. Three, if that sucker is in your purse, chances are you are not going to grab that on the first try.>> In another life I taught Women's Self Defense Courses. Someone would always ask, Do you advise carrying a gun or pepper spray? My Mantra, Can you clean it, practice regularly with it, and point it at the center of mass (or eyes) and pull the trigger without hesitation? If not, statistics tell us that bringing a gun to a violent crime can only insure that a gun will be involved in said crime, neh? Also, it is very hard to test fire/practice with pepper spray, and the eyes as part of the head can be easy to move out of the line of fire. With dedication and training you should be able to put 6 shots in a 6" pattern from zero to 25 paces with most quality hand guns legally available, that is if you can pull the trigger without hesitation . On to logistics. In Georgia, it is not so easy to get a concealed carry permit, but perfectly legal to wear a gun exposed. I'd say a woman with a Glock .40 on her hip would be a strong visual deterrent If you actually hit your assailant with a handgun, be prepared to be arrested, questioned, and possibly required to post bond until the authorities are comfortable that your actions are indeed self-defense...This is also true of pepper spray, but you may not get cuffed and arrested. As for me, I used to carry a Bali-song because of the options it offers both closed and open. But working for the government, I am constantly in and out of Courthouses and so no metal...However, as an Engineer, I usually have a pen and pencil in my shirt pocket, and always have a belt on I also know some rather healthy men under age 35 that always Cary a cane to the airport I guess now that I'm over 35 I might NEED a cane Yours in Jung Do, Charles Richards Moja Kwan TSD Shop online without a credit card http://www.rocketcash.com RocketCash, a NetZero subsidiary ------------------------------ From: "David Salt" Date: Thu, 11 Jan 2001 23:57:00 -0500 Subject: the_dojang: modern Korea From what I know, South Korea is a country that is becomming more and more modern and western in nature. But many Koreans see the US as their cash cow that they can milk. Many Koreans will buy existing MA schools and then sell them a few years later to another Korean. One friend of mine, living on Long Island (NY), took Kuk Sul Won. The instructor incouraged my friend and others in the school who got to brown belt level to test for their black belts. They tested and NONE of them passed. The instructor then sold the school to another Korean and it became a TKD school. The instructor went back to Korea $500 per student richer!!! My friend was mad because he had taken TKD and wanted to study a more advanced style like KSW. The instructor was very vague about the KSW students statis with the new TKD school, but he did tell my friend that he had lifetime free membership with the TKD school, which I dont think that my friend was really sure about. Now dont get me wrong, I'm not saying that all Koreans are greedy, just that some see this whole MA thing as a way to make money and possibly to leave their country and be successful in another country. But to be honest, I have incountered more captive contracts sported by Korean schools than any other MA schools. Does anyone on the list have experiance with CONTRACTS? What is there view on it? I see in my Yellow Pages that many MA schools advertised that they have "NO CONTRACTS". Hello, From what I understand, Okinawan karate uses a symbol (called tomoye or domoe, three paisleys in a circle) the symbolises the trinity of mind, spirit and body. In the Shinto religion, the picture symbolises the universe. I also found some taekwondo pages mentioning 'the trinity' as being the combination of mind, body and spirit or life but also a combination of jacket, pants and belt (jacket being heaven, pants being earth and belt being human beings) I have for instance learned that the belt 'contains' the spirit of the warrior, which can be a different explanation of the belt being the human. I am taught to (try to) have respect in the way that the belt should never touch the ground etc, but we have nver taken the dobok into this aspect. Since I have never heared of this subject before (apart from reading about it), I am wondering if others can tell me a bit more about this subject. Are there school that teach this philosophy? Do you apply this to wearing your dobok and tie? Is the idea of the taekwondo trinity just a copy of okinawan karate? Okay, I'm done now, I'll step off my soapbox. Sorry about the long post, folks. I do want to say again that NONE of this post is directed at either Anne or Donnla---they were both trying to help, and passing along information they thought would be helpful to people. I wish more people thought along those lines. As a former statistican, I'd say that studies show (statistics can tell you almost anything) that any weapon used to protect yourself lessens the probability that you will be sigificantly harmed.
