Where is the Lineage for Dr. Jung Hwan Park who trained Directly under Yong Shul Choi?? and trained Mike Wollmershauser, and so on... Just curious ------------------------------ From: KACraneTKD@aol.com Date: Sat, 13 Jan 2001 20:40:00 EST Subject: the_dojang: Background Checks Doing background investigations (BI) on perspective students has its pros and cons...no pun intended! Without going into much detail, it can be good because the dojang owner will know (maybe) if the wanna be student has a problem. Of course, how extensive will this BI be...police reports, credit checks, interview of references, etc.? How much are you willing to spend? You could require, say, 16 year olds and up, to obtain a criminal history record check and child abuse check from the State Police such as we can do in Pennsylvania. It's not too expensive, and you could have the new student pay for the checks. The good thing about any kind of BI is that you can (maybe) weed out potential problem students. A negative impact is that doing a routine BI on every new student can leave a bad taste in the mouth(s) of the new student(s) and can become cost prohibitive. Of course, you could always promote the rational for a BI in that it keeps out folks with criminal records, etc., if this is your intent. I could go on and on, however, I think most people get the gist. My three colleagues and I do not require a BI nor are we likely to do so. FWIW! With all due respect...what's the point? We live in the world of the knife and the gun. People looking to hurt others will simply acquire one of those two easily obtained instruments, or some other tool. I just don't think that there's a substantial group of would be rapists, muggers, and murderers looking to invest the time and energy it takes to learn to hurt others with their bare hands. I've found that those of questionable character (punks, thugs, street brawlers, etc) rarely make it past the first few weeks of martial arts training. They either: 1. Don't have what it takes 2. Figure out it's much easier to get a gun or a knife than to try and become the next Bruce Lee or Billy Jack...duh. "Gut feel" is the best indicator for whether or not you want someone involved in your program. Besides, you're not an employer or some other entity for which most people would wave their right to privacy in order for you to go through the EXPENSIVE task of running background checks. Yes, you'd have to outsource this task (which ain't cheap), or else give up sleeping if you wanted to do it yourself (which ain't cheap either). I really don't see this as an issue for concern. Nobody ever robbed a bank using TKD. Sorry if I came off as being a smart@$$, but this is a little much. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ From: "jere-hilland" Date: Sun, 14 Jan 2001 12:12:04 -0500 Subject: the_dojang: Background Checks Ray, I do not think I would have potential instructors go under the microscope as one would probably have known the individual for years as a student first. We do them at the office (I work for a major insurance carrier) before making an offer of employment. A partial background check would be frivolous for our purposes but a limited one would be sufficient for bonding purposes. Our background checks include a credit check from all 3 major agencies, a court house criminal and civil suit check, a complete reference check and then a drug test. Although this is academic for our purposes at the dojang as we are all volunteer instructors, it is nevertheless, not cheap. It also takes several weeks and possibly longer depending on the depth of the search. When I obtained my Texas concealed handgun license, the background check took 6 weeks, but most of this time was due to the FBI background check. A friend of mine, the President of national investigation firm who does a lot of this work for me (he is from Chicago and is a tkd 3rd dan and hkd 1st dan) will be in Jackson with us in February.
