It would have to be some kind of standard implemented by ALL schools. Someone suggested that potential students should provide BI's at their expense. I would thing that most would balk at this, and simply go to school Bor C. In this day of commercialism & trying to stay afloat, I would think that this would not be an option for many instructors....unless it was sstandard practice, which brings us back to the issue of regulation... And then how about if we turn the table... How would you feel if potential students came into your school willing to join, and then asked you not only if you had a criminal record, but to prove it. Now, I know most are saying "not me", but there may be some who do, and have paid their price to society. Case in point...how about the instructor who ended up having to defend himself, and found himself facing criminal charges...and losing. I once studied under a TKD instructor who did have a criminal record...which I found out much later. Funny thing was, he was one of the best instructors I ever studied under... the nicest guy on the face of the earth, who would give you the shirt off his back. Just don't get him PO'ed when he was in his "element". He eventually paid the ultimate price for his criminal acrtivities... BTW...In case your wondering...no I don't, but considering the environment I grew up in...I consider myself VERY fortunate. In some self-defense classes you are taught to run from a gun, with a breakdown of the low odds of being seriously wounded or killed by a shot fired. The basis is that the bad guy doesn't get to the range much. The discipline of martial art is seldom contained in the bad guy. Even with a background check you can't tell the future. People with good backgrounds but evil in their hearts hide the evil and pay their mortgages and send their kids to the same school as yours. I once trained with someone who wound up on the 10 most wanted list, but a background check at the time would have revealed a devoted family man and a veteran. Deny training to convicted sex offenders? Nice idea, but you can't afford to identify them. A simple name search to find any criminal record costs more than you might expect to receive for the first month of instruction. So you teach for 1-2 months for free? You might could ask them during your initial interview, maybe on an application, provided it doesn't violate some other rule about privacy or discrimination. Other than that, you pretty much have to work on gut feel. Maybe you can set out three bowls of rice or something? :-) Rick Foley ------------------------------ From: bwoodard@mortonsalt.com Date: Mon, 15 Jan 2001 08:08:45 -0600 Subject: the_dojang: Compound Movements Mr Stovall; Thank you for your insightful words. You have peaked my interest. I have a goal this year to tone -up and build my endurance. I 've got a black belt test some time this year! ;-) With your keen insight in calisthenics and body weight exercises, I would be interested in what you would recommend as for the "ideal regimen" for a martial artist. If anyone else out there has found a regimen that works for them share the wealth!! :-) Brian Woodard "dirty brown belt" TKD ------------------------------ From: "Michael Rowe (outlook)" Date: Mon, 15 Jan 2001 08:56:17 -0600 Subject: the_dojang: RE: Background checks For the general student body this is cost prohibitive. However, for those that are in leadership positions with children and such I think it is important that a background check is conducted. This way child abusers and molesters as well as those with general assault records may not be put into a leadership position where you as a school owner must explain why you had such a person in a position of power - if an incident happens. We can't prevent abuse if the person has not had a record of such behavior before or they just haven't been caught yet. However, if you are found to have hired an instructor that was a sex offender or had a history of assault and something happens - I can guarantee your enrollment will suffer as will the pocket book when the lawsuit comes down for neglect. Like do they write alot >of bad checks ... what is their credit like ... do they have a history of >violence in their life .... ? Background checks are what the company I work for does. We have almost national service (I say almost because I'm not really sure....I just make sure the network works and the servers are up.) If you would like to have backgrounds checked and are not sure how to proceed, check out the website. http://www.diligence.com We do criminal record searches, which are probably just the kind of thing one might be concerned with in a prospective student. *shrug* I normally don't "advertise" for the company, but I had to speak up. Check it out if you're interested. I really don't know enough about the details to explain more than I have. :o) Jer (jlynde@diligence.com) ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Mon, 15 Jan 2001 15:02:04 PST Subject: the_dojang: . ------------------------------ End of The_Dojang-Digest V8 #30 ******************************* It's a great day for Taekwondo!
