Compound movements are the cornerstone of true strength building. Squats, hang cleans, deadlifts, power pulls, split jerks, etc.etc. this is what the serious athlete uses, in ALL the countries of the world! The one point I might contend is the statement that he has seen people that can bench press twice their bodyweight not be able to do pushups,, I would have to see that to believe it.. it is my observation as a competetive weightlifting coach for quite a few years that I have NEVER seen that. Michael Tomlinson ------------------------------ From: "Bruce Sims" Date: Tue, 16 Jan 2001 08:14:15 -0600 Subject: the_dojang: Re: The_Dojang-Digest V8 #31 Dear Folks: Hopefully, now that I am getting the Digest through my e-mail address rather than through work I will be able to keep on top of things. Please find in queue a series of cuts from the E-Budo Net (Members' Forum) which I recently placed. I would sincerely appreciate input from any and all Korean MA pratitioners. In the past any cert program has usually had some hidden agenda or was skewed towards a particular group. If this program works I would like to think that a decent opportunity was provided to as many MA practitioners as possible to shape a cert program that could truely raise the quality of MA instruction--- not just in Hapkido-- but in a range of MArtial Arts. Quoted Material begins------- ".....I am starting a new thread for anyone who is interested in pitching in on a new project which may or may not take off. Without going in to a lot of details I have been offered an opportunity to organize a certification process for martial arts teachers through the local community college. I will tell you right now that this process will be nowhere as sophisiticated as the Indiana Univwersity program, nor will it have the commercial overtones of the NAPMA through Mr. Graden. The goal of the process is to produce a better MA instructor independent of the art they have chosen to teach. The purpose of this string is not to argue about enforcement, or red tape. What I am offering people is an opportunity to participate in an organizational process. Is anybody game? OOOOppppsss Sorry. I forgot to mention that the process would be offered on line through the JC website and would comprise about 45 hours of work to produce a 3 collegiate hour block of instruction. Bruce __________________ I assume you have reviewed the lengthy discussion on the subject in the Bad Budo section. Please feel free to email me directly and also take a gander at http://www.atama.org to see what a group of like-minded instructors are developing. In a 3 unit course, I think you will simply be doing a general overview of concepts, but I think there is enough material online and previously written that you could build a good course syllibus from. Best wishes and let me know if I may help. Respectfully, Kevin Schaller __________________ I think Kevin has a point -- in 45 hours, with three credits, the best you can do is show people where to find reasonably reliable information, and then have them take some tests to suggest that they know how to analyze and interpret what they find. Since you are doing an online course, I would think that you would try to use Internet sources as much as you could, as that would facilitate everyone working from the same information inexpensively. Off the top of my head, topics could logically include: Advertising and Marketing Business Accounting/Fundraising Counseling Criminal Law First Aid History and Culture Human Development Instutitional Politics Kinesiology Leadership Principles Motivational Development (both self and group) Organizational Skills Pedagogy Physiology Risk Analysis/Safety Stress Management Testing Procedures Tournament Organization Sure, that's a lot of stuff, but the idea, as I said, isn't to make anyone an expert, but to give everyone some idea of the responsibilities inherent in saying, "Sure, I'll teach a class," plus give an idea of where to go to improve their knowledge in areas in which s/he is weak. FWIW, I have some sample take-home tests; if you are interested, drop me a line and I'll send them to you. __________________ Joe http://ejmas.com And the hits just keep on coming..... Dear Joe and Kevin: I took the time to hard-copy the string on certification so I have that for guidance as well as your kind contributions. Thank you. Kevin, I will check that website for additional info. Just an FYI: The 3 college hours parameter is a fx of the origins of this effort. At the College of Lake County there is a 3 hour coaching module for individuals who express an interest in teaching/coaching the sport of their choice. This module is used to augment what is essentially a participatory sport program rather than an actual educational program. (By comparison, the Indiana University program is what I would consider a full-blown Sports Education program. With this in mind, Joe, your point is right on the money. With only 45 real-time computer hours to play with there is probably not much that will be handled in-depth. However, if I follow the old rule-of-thumb for educators about .5 to 1.0 hours homework for each hour of classroom, perhaps there is an opportunity to broaden this a bit. I suspect there will be a need to prioritize the categories, but right now I am considering 8 5-hour (modules size and number are arbitrary at this point) which counting the time off-line could actually be 8 10-hour modules. I suspect that I will need several lists such as Joes' and then perhaps publish a compendium of these lists such that people could indicate to me which are the 8 Most Important Subjects. BTW: I am also publishing this effort on the DOJANG DIGEST Net for their imput there and heartily encourage anyone to pass this along to other potential participant groups along with my e-mail if they think it will help the cause. But perhaps others can... it had to do with whether a person being attacked (e.g. a rape attack) was better off (1) not resisting, (2) resisting minimally, (3) resisting strongly, (4) resisting with a weapon. It was shown that as the attackee (as opposed to the attacker) increased their level of resistance the chance of injury to them declined.
