There's also a concept of "permissible purpose" which basically means you need to have a valid need for the information. As I said, I'm not really up on the details, check out the website for more NFO. I have my doubts about Mr McD's assessment. "If they were to do a background check on me then I would be prevented from ever taking martial arts." Would Master Wong have turned you away based on that information? I'm not sure that everyone would be so quick to judge based on background check info. Perhaps it would serve as a warning for potential problems down the road. IANABB, but when I am, I don't believe I'll use background checks. I prefer to go with my gut on whether or not I trust people. I just work here. ;o) Of course, I'm getting way ahead of myself..since I'm merely a Blue Belt. Who knows what I'll think in a few years? The U.S. Department of Justice Bureau of Justice Statistics puts out a yearly report on crime. If you go to their website at- http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs you can slog your way through to get to the latest report for 1998. For the shortcut to just the yearly reports on crime go to- http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/abstract/cvusst.htm They basically try to break down a years worth of crime into all sorts of little categories- what happened, where, to whom etc. Table 72 under the heading "The Crime Event" deals with victims who used some form of self defense (fighting, screaming, running etc.) and their perception of how it helped/hurt them (in 98). The majority in each category of crime thought it helped. Check out the site. We have a new student at our dojang who lives as a women but is biologically a man. A very big, strong man! "She" is very nice and a talented martial artist. She will be competing in our upcoming tournament in the women's sparring division. How would you, as a women, feel about sparring " her" in a tournament situation?
