It brought back a memory that I had when my school was first opened and I would open the door early in the morning for business. A very drunk and very pissed off man came into my school and he wanted to know if I could teach him to dodge cars ! Seems he was walking along ... minding his own business when this car came down the street and almost ran him over ! Well, of course it would ... he was walking in the street ... but nonetheless ... without batting an eye I told him I didn't teach car defense and I directed him to a school down the street that did ... He thanked me and promptly left ... and I very quickly closed the school up before he came back. I do everything by appointments now ... my neighborhood is not a very good neighborhood to have the doors open all day on ... waiting for people to drop by. Mostly transients and drunks will wander in (so I found out). But thanks for the memories ! LOL Illona ------------------------------ From: Piotr Bernat Date: Sat, 20 Jan 2001 10:51:30 +0200 Subject: the_dojang: New rules Hello, recently some WTF style Taekwondo tournaments in Germany are fought under a new set of rules. Of course this is nothing official yet but some tournament organisers do experiment with the rules during friendly competitions. The new system was pioneered by Grandmaster Park Soo Nam and named TA-System (from the title of "Taekwondo Aktuell" magazine led by GM Park - they introduced and promoted it). The basic rules are: - - one round only - depending on age group 2, 4 or 5 minutes - - after one competitors gets a certain points advantage (3-5 points difference depending on the event) the bout is stopped and awarded to this competitor (just like in point fighting events) - - in a case of a 0:0 draw, "golden kick" rule will be applied, i.e. the competitor who scores first point wins; in case of 1:1, 2:2 etc. the competitor who SCORED first point during the match wins. In some tournaments 2 points for head kicks are awarded. I would like to hear your opinions about this rules. Do you think it could / should be introduced in official WTF competitions as well? We are going to compete in Berlin in February for the first time under this system. The technique is to reach up with both your hands, grabbing their hands pulling them down and out (plucking) simultaneously kneeing them in the groin. After that it goes into various palm, knee, and elbow strikes to finish off the attacker. <<<<, >>>>>Alain writes<<<<<<<< I don't care for this "plucking" defense because often a person will have trouble doing it against a stronger person. Someone who has been in a fight or two will not let you knee them that easily, and to reach up with your hands against his hands puts your strength against his and if he is stronger, it is difficult. I like the technique where you throw your arm over his hands and bring your weight down on the hands with your arm pit. This way, you have your weight against his hands and a smaller person has a better chance at breaking the hold. This is the defense I teach in my new video. Not that the plucking can't or won't work, it's just that I feel the other can work for more people in more situations, especially when the attacker is stronger.<<<<<<<<<, George says, What ever works for you Steven and Alain. I prefer to forget about the choke and attack directly to the eyes or throat with multiple strikes done in rapid succession. A cool head will always prevail in these situations. Of course there are many ways to get rid of the choke, but.... george petrotta _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ From: HogWldFLTR@cs.com Date: Sat, 20 Jan 2001 10:47:22 EST Subject: the_dojang: Re: TKD and HKD In a message dated 1/19/01 12:52:56 PM US Mountain Standard Time, the_dojang-owner@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com writes: << Regarding the connection between TKD and HKD, I hypothesize that it is because they are both Korean arts that complement each other well. The pure HKD students in our school do not appear to have developed their kicks to the highly refined level of TKD and our TKD students are *nowhere* near the HKD students regarding any kind of locks, takedowns, etc. So why not have both? Then you still have each one for those who don't want one or more aspects of the other, but the people who want both can go for it! >> From my understanding there is a significant difference in the basis of the two styles. TKD origins were to attack riders on horse back as a response to the Japanese occupation of Korea. I was told by my former Korean instructor that the style was taught by grandfathers to young teens in the mountains of Korea after the fighting age men had been put to death. At 48 my ability to peform flying/spinning kicks is poorer then it was at age 30 when I started TKD; it was none to great then in comparison to the teens and 20 year olds. HKD seems to me more rounded and far less focussed on tournaments, where in my opinion TKD is focussed today. - -Lee A grey beard in Tucson ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Sat, 20 Jan 2001 10:13:55 PST Subject: the_dojang: . ------------------------------ End of The_Dojang-Digest V8 #43 ******************************* It's a great day for Taekwondo!
