We are a 501(c)3 "Non-profit athletic/eductional association" or something. We don't have any paperwork now but I know there was a BUNCH to get it started. And I'm pretty sure we can take in (and claim as profit) as much as we want. But if we take in more than $25,000, we have to file a Form 940 or something. Shaun M. Perhaps this is because of the difference in technique Strategies. As I have said, the typical Hapkido strategy that I've encountered (as related to joint locks and throws) seems to be "off balance is nice but not really required." Thus, the off balance part of the "Four Deportments" can wait till more advanced rank or perhaps is not emphasized to any but those who require it more due to advancing age or lesser stature / strength...." I'm right there with you-100% And let me just tweak this a bit. Its not so much that the material I am sharing must wait for later, but that by a particular level a person should be familiar with the concepts and able to incorporate them to some extent. The reason I mention this is that commonly I run into individuals who believe this is just mind-f*****g and has no actual application in technique. What I have witnessed, then, is that as a person gets older and has relatively less muscular advantage over a younger or stronger opponent or partner. In response, they attempt to use only pain-compliance by simply cranking harder on the technique. Sometimes it works but mostly I see it as diminshing returns as the person gets older. I'll bet OS Ueshiba probably got some deference for his uke-s. I'll also bet, even in his 80-s, he didn't need it as much as a person might think, and I can't imagine he was depending solely on pain-compliance. Does this sound like the approach at your dojo? After I met my wife back in '79, I began teaching her off and on. More off than on. She even took classes where I worked at a YMCA for a time, but I wasn't the teacher or even in the class. There were some times she came to my class regular, but after taking 20 years to reach 1st gup, she's just not real interested in MA, and I think the thought of anybody thinking of her as a "black belt" scared her. She doesn't see herself that way. She supports me very much, but it's not "her thing". BTW, Both my daughters train with me and really love it. I'm not extra hard on them, nor too easy - I try to be fair. I remember one of them taking a couple of years between gup ranks, because she just wasn't ready for a promotion. They had to earn it. So I wasn't sure if you just meant instructors in general, or full time TKD instructors who teach or teach with their wives. As you know, I'm not a full time intstuctor. If this person is truly nice...they should already have thought >of how others would feel having to deal with their choice. With a pure martial arts spirit, this individual would realize that the consequences of their decision can, and definitely does impact others. Weighing this against their "own" desires, this individual should realize that they would be better positioned to compete in the male rings. If they won there, great. If they did not, they should be satisfied with the challenge, and learn what they can from it....If they *need* a trophy to feel good about themselves and their abilities, no amount of "competition" will ever, truely, give them this feeling. Of course, the devil is in the details. It is not particularly difficult or expensive to set up a non-profit corporation in a state. Check with your Office of Secretary of State, or something that equates in the state organizations -- It's probably the same organization that governs your business license.
