The instructor told us what equipment to wear and why. When one student decided he didn't need that particular item, the instructor demo'd why he did. Speaking of paper bags, it is amazing to me how many upper belts I know who have probs kicking a pad with any force, what would they do if it was a mugger. (Patty cake?) My first school demanded all students above the beginner rank spar as part of the promo test. Of course, you could improve the skills but sparring full contact was necessary to get to the next rank. The instructor felt that hitting pads was a good start but the feel of blocking a kick or punch thrown with some power as well as contacting another solid human being with a kick or strike was very important to developing the TKD skill, tournament competitor or not. Date: 27 Jan 01 Time: 9:06 Location: Cebu City, Philippines Comments: Today was a glorious day. This Saturday, I met with two Arnis/ Escrima experts. One was a 7th Dan and one was a 6th Dan. We met on the roof of my brother in law's house. It was the fourth floor overlooking the Banawa District of Cebu City. We started around 9 a.m. I met the same two individuals five years ago when I visited Cebu with my lovely wife. But at that time I was not open to the wonders of the Filipino Martial Arts. This day was special to me simply because two wonderful individuals shared with me their love of Arnis/Escrima or Filipino Martial Arts. They simply wanted to share their love of a martial art with me. We did not worry about what Kwan or family they hailed from (although I knew). We did not worry about the politics of martial arts. We started by working on basic stances and the 12 stikes. We proceeded to the offensive and defensive moves. Then I was shown the long range strikes, power strikes, and footwork. We proceeded to disengaging the weapon. The 7th Dan was a World Champion in Arnis/Esrikma. He was in his late 50's. A humble man. What struck me is that I had to insist that both men take my payment for their lessons and their time. This is the Filipino way. This is the way martial arts should be taught. Simple truths, simple facts. A great day. Ken McDonough __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! I gazed across the sub-division being built, the hard laborers sweating in the heat. They had all stopped working. They were all lined up along the roofs of the various housing developments. They were watching us practice. They were watching the Filipino Masters pass along their art. This was a special moment. An awesome moment. This is what the martial arts is all about.
