In kindergarten, when the children learn how to count and may be some simple addition, would we say that we are teaching them Math? Obviously it is not the "whole" Math (whatever that means) that someone can learn. When can we really say that the students are learning Math? When can we say that someone, kid or adult, is really learning HKD? Can HKD starts with the first punch, or the first roll? When the adult white belt starts in the class, do they start learning HKD or only after a certain amount of time or technique, or level, etc. before they actually learn HKD. All this to say that we all start learning techniques at a different pace, may be in a different order. We should not teach the kid some of the same techniques that we teach the adult yet but we can still teach them HKD? My opinion is just the same as yours, he is not producing the sound from his "center" (dan tien, or whatever iteration of that concept), and therefore, like my wife after my sons soccer games, he is hoarse. He is shouting, not "ki-happing", two entirely different things, at least IMHO. I believe that learning to produce this noise from the "center" comes with practice and training, and maybe even by some mystical change in the spirit from training. I love getting a chance to teach the kids and am able to make more sound, with less effort, than the whole group. I always tell them it's one of the only places they go where it's OK to shout. I think the kids won't get the concept of dan tien, so I just encourage them to go for it, tell them to breathe properly, and hope they'll get it via osmosis. As for the inappropriateness of his yell, I think you might need to address that; others might take his lead and you'll end up with a chorus of Bullfrogs rather than a coherent sounding martial arts class. Judging from your posts I would say you would be able to diplomatically and courteously handle the situation without hurting anyone's feelings. Odd question that may have an obvious answer to some Hwarangdo people: Has anyone other than the Lees met Suahm Dosa? (Sorry about the spelling---I don't have my other dojang mailings handy.) Other than the Lees, did anyone else train with S.D.? Pictures? Meet him? See his technique? Just curious. My name is Steve Stone. I currently take Hapkido from James Sunhwan Chung in Kalamazoo Michigan. I recently talked to Master J.R. West about locating my original Hapkido teacher in Korea and he suggested that I contact you. I started my Hapkido training under Chang Young Sil in 1986-87 at the Korea Hapkido Association Songtan Gym. While I was stationed at Osan Air Force Base I fell in love with Hapkido. I would like to contact Chang Young Sil. Is there any way you can help? I am waiting until Friday to see how it goes. If it is not going any better on Friday, I will consult then. For now, I will reduce the intensity of training.
