Martial arts, by design, were intended for something totally different than what most of us are using it for today. Perhaps the Masters hold back some of the traditional techniques, because they just don't fit the needs of today's practitioner. Indeed, they may serve to deter people from joining, and so the Master may simply be exercising prudence to keep his students from quitting. A possibility, yes? ...." If I am very honest with myself, perhaps I need to own that there is no small amount of bitterness regarding that situation that I related. Thank you for your diplomacy. Within the context of the incident itself, I can't say that what you shared about a GM exercising good judgement wasn't what was going on, so perhaps from that standpoint I need to go easy. On the other hand, I still hold such situations up as indicative of just how capricious curriculum decisions can be. Certainly one of the strengthes of the Hapkido arts are their versatility and so the ability to provide options to just about anybody based on circumstances and the abilities of the practitioner. My concern is that when this "versatility" is applied by the instructor to the student and curriculum as "anything goes"."Anything goes" might mean incorporating whatever is fad or pop at the time. "Anything goes" might mean cutting out anything which does not appear to have immediate purpose or application. "Anything goes" may be whatever will keep the students paying their tuition. "Anything goes" may be cutting out whatever the students balk at. I suspect some part of my bitterness regarding the particular situation I shared occurred in about the same time frame as the death of GM Han who first organized the UTF (Universal TKD Fed). One of the rumors circulating after GM Han's death was that he took with him TKD material as yet untaught, and I view this as a terrible travesty. IMHO being a teacher includes having to teach material which can be both popular and unpopular; exciting or boring; easy or challenging. How we do this is what makes us teachers. But simply cutting and stitching the art to fit circumstances is not the answer, nor is representing the modified product as the original. Thanks, Rudy. Bruce ------------------------------ From: "Bruce Sims" Date: Sat, 3 Feb 2001 07:25:05 -0600 Subject: the_dojang: Re: The_Dojang-Digest V8 #78 Dear Luc: You will notice that I am not beginning this post with some clip from your contribution. In fact I had to smile a bit as I read your post as I could have easily have written exactly the same thing myself. I think we are both actually coming from the same place. I, too, have taught classes only to have students drop because another teacher did not expect as much or was not as exacting. The students who remained uniformly reported that they found the class challenging and that they leaned way more than they thought they were going to. Quite regularly I have students come to my school from other MA schools reporting that hey had learned all that the previous teacher had to teach them. From what they demonstrate in my classes it isn't much. So I raise the bar for them and sometimes they stay and sometimes they don't. The difference seems to be those who are sincerely interested in learning the art, and those who are interested in a pass-time or just to see what Hapkido is "like". Were I to keep the bar artificially low I would probably keep more students from the second category in my classes, but what would that do to the integrity of the art? Could I still say that I teach Hapkido? Had I elected, as a HS Social Studies teacher, to arbitrarily cut out sections of the curriculum b/c students found it boring--say, US History---could I still say that I was teaching US History? Perhaps my classes would have been more popular because they were less demanding, but was the HS student getting the real thing? I'm going to bet that both you and I have learned the same lesson -- that presenting oneself as a teacher in any subject is more than just presenting material. There is the unpopular work of teaching the "whole truth", doing the "unpopular tasks", Standing in front of a group and having them respond on command is heady stuff but it is only a portion of the picture. We teachers are also stewards or our arts as well as the students and the schools.and this is the position that I am advocating for. Good stuff, Luc.
