I've been out of practice now for several years due to some uncontrollable asthma that hasn't responded to much of anything, sigh. Nonetheless, did want to comment on one thing that Danny Dunn wrote about: "I reply: [stuff cut] A few days ago I told about seeing a technically good bb get soundly beat, because he was not prepared mentally to deal with being hit hard. He just did not expect anyone to ever hit him hard. Same thing. I run into this all the time with students. The first time I put them in a free style defense situation (armed or unarmed), they invariablly try to free-spar the attacker." Well, I'm not from the youguns' (now 48) but I do remember early in my dojang carear, I htink I was a yellow belt, doing free sparring with full contact and taking a nasty roundhouse kick to the head. I was wearing full protective gear yet it was such an incredible "shock to the system" it stopped me dead in my tracks and I fell to one knee and just froze. Now, the kick wasn't really all that nasty *smile*, I had just never been kicked in the head before! I learnt a valuable lesson from that day, and onwards where the idea of "getting used to being hit" and still continue on was so so important to me. Even out of training those "memories" are with me. Fortunately not at the same time. I must have a defect when it comes to those little suckers. At the time I wasn't actively training in TKD, but I can give you an idea of the treatment progression. My lower arm was immobilized in a short cast (didn't cover the elbow, couldn't pronate/supinate the hand) for about 8 weeks. My left hand (non-dominant) was x-rayed at the 8 week point & the bone had healed sufficiently to remove the cast and progress to non-supervised physical therapy (they gave me exercises & let me do them at home, as opposed to a PT center or something.) My right-hand break was more severe, it was an odd break that I suffered in a lacrosse match that was initially diagnosed as a sprain. They x-rayed it and the break didn't show. 3 weeks later the wrist still hurt, and when they x-rayed it again, the break was visible. Apparently if you don't immobilize the wrist the broken bone will actually degenerate! So, 8 weeks after THAT cast was put on (and I got my ambidexterity to new heights) they x-rayed again...and the break was better but still apparent. The atrophy in the hand had gotten a little alarming though, so they put me in a soft cast. 4 weeks later that one came off & I went through therapy again. Summary: Cast 8-12 weeks; careful therapeutic treatment 4-6 weeks; re-training to normal use 4 weeks of gradually increasing intensity. Navicular bones are notoriously bad healers due to a very limited blood supply and very active (between the thumb and forearm) anatomy. My breaks were when I was between 19 and 22 years old. As the greybeards will attest, bone healing slows way down as you get older. Incidentally, I'd put off returning to punching until you've completed the return to normal function period...same with blocking. Unless you practice Olympic-style TKD you'll definitely need to adjust your training to protect that hand. Good luck with your healing and rehab. - -JW 3rd Gup TKD From: Tim Moriarty Date: Tue, 6 Feb 2001 08:19:51 -0800 Subject: the_dojang: Broken Hand I've just broken my carpal navicular bone in my hand while training and I'm being told that it is the slowest healing bone in the hand. Has anybody had a similar break? And if so, what was your recovery time and how did it impact your training? Any secrets to a speedier recovery from a broken hand? Thanks, Tim ------------------------------ From: "Patrick L" Date: Tue, 06 Feb 2001 15:20:24 -0800 Subject: the_dojang: Hapkido, Infinity and beyond Dear Luc, I like your analogy of MA training being like grammar. It dovetails exactly with my point. It is the rules of grammer that make conversation possible, it is varied vocabulary that make it interesting. IMHO too many MA students want to jump to interesting, bypassing the rules (foundations). It is only in study that a person realizes how much they don't know. However, I would hazard the guess that after 34 years, your selection of GM's worth learning from has been refined? I share your enthusiasm of becoming a better MA. I know I have an infinite way to go.
