This is to show the public what they have acheived and what they are made of. To the other students....it is to show them what they have to look forward to......... what they can expect when it is their turn. Besides.....testing in front of all those people is a good test for mental strength. Wow! what a rush to be put on the spot.....especially when breaking! Another way to look at it is that most black belts eventually venture into teaching. How can they expect the students to perform in front of the dojang family if they have never done so themselves. Ultimately...testing is derived from the "old days" when martial artist when perform in front of the royal court, guests, and other martial artist....not in private. What did you pay for the Delica? I any in the process of getting two more for two of my students. I normally use Discount Knives of the Internet. The site is awkward, bulky, and fairly non-helpful. However, the selection is huge, and if you already know what you want, I've never found a cheaper place on-line. Shipping is cheap also. (They also have a 10%-better-than-anyone-else's-listed-price thing, which I've never had to use since I've never found anyone cheaper.) Service is quick, never had a problem. http://www.discountknives.com Thomas - ------------------------------------ thomcat@binary.net http://www.binary.net/thomcat/ "If you aren't modeling what you are teaching then you are teaching something else." ------------------------------ From: "john sodihlhxh" Date: Sun, 18 Feb 2001 10:10:22 -0600 Subject: the_dojang: korea trip Hi all. You are one of the sponsors ?? How cool ! You go, girl ! Did they come to you and ask or did you offer it to them ? Illona >> they asked us to do it. we gave 100 coffee mugs with our logo and the us open logo on them. i really wish we couldve afforded their suggestion of 1000 necklace type key rings/ID tags, but the cost was too much for us. the tournament director, christine rebiel, seems like a great lady and really fought for sponsors to help out. unfortunately, too many prospective sponsors wanted free airfare, hotel rooms, etc. the tournament couldnt afford that kind of luxury so those companies decided not to sponsor the tournament. kinda frustrating. from what i hear, though, it's gonna be a great tournament....and BIG....over 1500 competitors. btw, you can still enter the u.s.open and here's the site: http://www.usopentaekwondo.com melinda :) Chajonshim Martial Arts Supply http://www.chajonshim.com Proud Sponsor of the 10th Annual 2001 US Open Taekwondo Championships ------------------------------ From: "Robert Martin" Date: Sun, 18 Feb 2001 09:54:45 -0700 Subject: the_dojang: Re: The_Dojang-Digest V8 #120 Robert Martin A-4-336 "Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent." In the USTF/ITF (Taekwon-Do), Dan and Gup testings are open. This is a time of celebration for us. It seems to really get the people testing pumped to have family, friends, and fellow students there for testing. I know it helped me. Also do you 'test' on weapons forms? >> Our BB tests are open. IMHO this is a good thing because: 1) Color belts rarely get to see what (skill-level) a BB is; perhaps occasionally at a demo they get a glimpse. We are always teaching their tech and practice our own within BB-only classes for the most part. Open BB tests allow the color belts a good picture of the (initial) goal and should be inspiring to them. It also allows BBs the same opportunity to watch higher dan ranks test. 2) The families of those testing should have the opportunity to see the results of their investment (money, time), as well as the pleasure of sharing in their loved one's accomplishments. Yes, we test on weapons forms.
