Sure, you have to have SOME concept of where you are headed, but how many people achieve EXACTLY what they set out to achieve? What I mean by this is, when you set your eyes on "black belt" as a lower rank, what is that? And then when you get there, does it mean the same thing anymore? IMHO, Shaun M. You >can't >really have one without the other. > >Kerry >WTF TKD > There is a philosophical difference here between Eastern and Western thinking. The reason most MAs names end with "do" is because "do" means "the way". MAs teach us the way of living, and of improving ourselves. Belts are just mile posts on your path. You should be able to find happiness and enjoyment on your journey without ever achieving any goal. Have you ever read a book just for the fun of it, and not because you have to write a report on it? How about taking a walk just because you enjoy the view or the companion, and not because you have to go somewhere? What is the point of getting a BB if you don't like the practice? Would you rather enjoy the practice and never getting a belt? Look at all those children playing basketball in the school gym. How they enjoy it, how hard they play without ever thinking about making the MBA. I am sure Ken McDonough can tell you how he enjoy those training time in Cuba without ever thinking about getting a belt or being certified by the Philippines Masters. Not part of the SK government as I understand it, but it/they are under the control (to some degree) of the SK government and the IOC...." I would really consider it a service if a person or people in the know would please clarify to me the relationship between Korean Martial Arts/Martial tradition and its attendent organizations and the role and influence of the Korean government. For years now there has been a relationship alluded to and suggested in various ways, but actual examination seems to always turn out that no "official" relationship exists. Still, there continues to be references and allusions to the same. Is there, or is there not an offical relationship between the government of South Korea and one or more Marital art organizations or not? If such a relationship exists what exactly is its nature and what are the parameters of its authority? If such an official relationship does not exist what aspects support an "unofficial" relationship. Is it a matter of many practitioners also being heavily invested in government offices? Are there overlapping umbrella offices which tangetially relate to each other through some activities but not all? Or, is it just a marketing issue where a marginal relationship such as providing occasional training service has been "expanded" to suggest a deeper more long-lived relationship? I personally would love to know who I can check with to confirm or deny that a relationship of an organization, any organization, with the government of SK does in fact exist.I can't believe that the powers that be still expect the average MA practitioner on the street to continue to swallow the swill they have been pumping out for the last few decades without some level of proof. I was hopping on one foot, and the straps underneath my shin guards moved, causing me to lose balance. At one point, I was standing on my ankle...ouch. Unfortunately, I am (was) to compete in Columbus (Ohio) next weekend. This is a really big tournament, and I don't want to miss it. Having said that, I don't want to do anything stupid, and injure myself further. How long has it taken anyone to recover from this type of injury? At first, I was unable to put pressure on it...now I can put slight pressure on it (but I'm not..using crutches). Also, I iced it for the first 48 hours, and elevated it. I am taking ibuprofen (it was/still is really swollen). Is there anything I can do besides stay off of it to quicken the recovery? Is two weeks recovery time too optimistic? My game plan is that if I can put pressure on it without pain (too much), I'll tape it up real good and kick with the other leg. Does anyone know of any good sacrificial ceremonies I could perform to take care of this? :) ps. I am scheduled to go to my doctor tomorrow...I am in no way trying to look to this list for medical advice..I'm just looking for people who have had similar injuries and their experiences. ------------------------------ From: Gregory Giddins Date: Tue, 20 Feb 2001 15:35:14 -0700 Subject: the_dojang: Kukki-Article in Korea Herald Over 3,000 taekwondoists from 43 countries visit Kukkiwon More than 3,000 foreigners from 43 countries visited the Kukkiwon, the main training center for taekwondo, last year, the Kukkiwon said yesterday. The Seoul-based Kukkiwon said a total of 3,027 foreign taekwondo practitioners from 43 nations paid a visit to the mecca of the Korean traditional martial art in 2000, it said. By country, the United States topped others with 1,400, followed by Spain with 141 and Mexico with 119, it said. The 43 countries broke down to 19 Asian, 12 European, seven American, three African and two Oceanian nations. It attributed the surge in the number of visitors to the Kukkiwon largely to the growing popularity of taekwondo around the world. Taekwondo debuted as an official sport at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. It was a demonstration sport at the 1988 Seoul and 1992 Barcelona Olympics. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) decided last December to adopt taekwondo as a medal sport at the 2004 Athens and subsequent Olympic Games. Taekwondo is being practiced by some 50 million people around the world, according to the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF), taekwondo's world governing body. The Seoul-based federation, headed by Kim Un-yong, an executive board member of the IOC, has a membership of 162 countries http://www.koreaherald.co.kr/SITE/data/html_dir/2001/02/13/200102130059.asp ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Tue, 20 Feb 2001 15:12:55 PST Subject: the_dojang: . ------------------------------ End of The_Dojang-Digest V8 #127 ******************************** It's a great day for Taekwondo!
