How similar are traditional (not WTF) Tae Kwan Do and Tang Soo Do? Is there more of a philosophical difference? Do they have any similar roots in the original kwans? Are the forms similar? The USKMAF (United States Korean Martial Arts Federation) hosted the 14th Semi-Annual International Hapkido Seminar in Jackson, Mississippi this past weekend. This workshop was taught by fifteen instructors. Over the 3 day event, 30 one hour classes were taught. Each of the instructors taught 2 classes. The instructors included Master J. R. West (Mississippi), Master Renee West (Mississippi), Master Geoff Booth (Sydney Australia), Master Rich Hodder (Colorado), Master Harold Whalen (Connecticut), yours truly writing from Indiana, Master James Allison (Georgia), Master Dennis McHenry (Texas) and Master Perry Lyons (Pennsylvania). These are just the 8th - 5th dan who taught. The special guest visitor on Saturday was Dr. Kimm He Young who I journeyed with to Korea and China last summer. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Bruce Sims and Master Dan Rogers of this list. Special personal thanks to my good friend Master Booth, to a new friend Master Whalen and to my teacher and friend Master West. Jere R. The children are coddled and spoiled rotten ... they aren't allowed out of their parents sight..." Children NEED discipline. Discipline is structure and stability...it fits right in to Maslow's Hierarchy of needs. Many parents seem to use their children's activity time for more selfish a purpose than to intellectually or physically benefit their child. Just as television has become a 'baby-sitter,' so has the karate/dance/gymnastic/ music/school etc. instructor. Often, many parents transfer the responsibility of disciplining their child to outside sources. Perhaps we should all change our title to 'Discipline Consultant' and start to tack on a consulting fee along with our membership dues. I have seen a broad spectrum of behavioral problems during many children's activities. With the exception of those diagnosed w/ actually disabilities, I think the parent is the problem, not the child. Hats off to any type of instructor that has the patience to deal w/ such problems: You may be the one true stabilizing factor in the child's lives. Doesn't this take us right back to the conversation about students hanging out in the Do Jang? Were oh were have there parents gone, oh were oh were can they be? ------------------------------ From: "Atchinson, Kerry M" Date: Mon, 26 Feb 2001 09:48:49 -0600 Subject: the_dojang: RE: dedication and schools > << How many of you feel the journey is the important thing, yet expect > your > students to be "dedicated" and "serious" enough to to stick with their > training and achieve a BB ranking? > Just wondering. >> > > I guess that is why we don't have that many BB's in our school ... if they > > won't stick around long enough to achieve it ... My question to all the other martial artists how do YOU & yours carry out the BB tests?" Invited guests only is the most popular, with most Master's tests in private. For Moja Kwan TSD, we have and will continue to open Gup and Dan exams to member students, invited guests of the candidates, and invited examiners. > > > > Also do you 'test' on weapons forms? Yes, from WTSDA before I left; Staff Form #1 - Cho Dan Bo (learned as early as 4th Gup) Staff Form #2 - Cho Dan (learned as early as CDB) Staff Form #3 - E dan Knife Form - Sam Dan Sword Form - Sah Dan Cane Form - Oh Dan (under development?) I believe two more staff forms where being added. Moja Kwan TSD will include; Staff techniques for 4th Gup and up Knife techniques for 2nd Gup and up Sword techniques for Dans Forms will be one (maybe two) staff form(s) One knife form Two (or more) sword forms My Hapkido friends have taught me some rope and cane techniques, but they will not be requirements in my TSD based system at this time.
