I'm sorry I did not introduce myself. I have appreciated many of your comments and posts. On to BB Exams. These are MVHO's 1. The significant other that has taken a youth student (dojang mom) to some 200 classes, or adult S.O. that has missed that many eve's of time together, just might be interested in what their S.O. has been doing. For the adults, you are most attractive when you are doing what you enjoy most . 2. I have always felt that in a group test, the junior members get a glance of what they have to look forward to, and add their energy to the seniors on the mat. Or put another way, promotions are the result of all the hard work in a dojang. 3. I agree, rank exams are not something that's open to the general public, but do feel it should be shared with the dojang family. 4. Since I never invite candidates to an exam that have the potential to "fail", I feel there is nothing to keep from those who aspire to reach the same level(s) of recognition within the dojang kwan. Of course, everyone is doing what works for them, and I enjoy on or off list comments... Yours in Jung Do, Charles R. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? If so, any thoughts. Please feel free to e-mail me privately if you like...." I will start by first telling you that I have not personally attended one of S Dillmans' seminars. However, because preasure points are part of the Hapkido curriculum I routinely run into people who have attended the seminars, or into people who conduct seminars of their own based on the Tuite material. So far the responses have been pretty consistent. 1.) Size of the individual seems to influence the effectiveness of the techniques relative to the amount of body fat. This is pretty logical. The more fat a person has the more "inert" material to cushion the PP location. However there is also the innate variability of PP sensitivity from one person to another with individuals who have experienced contact sports seeming to be less effected than those not having this experience. 2.) There seems to be some level of suggestability involved producing a self-fullfilling prophecy sort of dynamic. Many individuals who have had a technique executed on them seem to respond as if on cue. Others who do not demonstrate this kind of compliance are often grabbed and supported at the same time that they would have expressed a response to the technique such that one may not know if their movement is a response to a technique or simply movement in response to being grabbed (to prevent them from falling). 3.) The techniques are universally applied from a static posture with the target at a resting level of metabolism (as such). Closer to a basal level of metabolism, ANY stimulus to a person's system will have a disproportionately higher impact. To say this another way, at higher levels of activity a person tends to screen out marginal stimuli. (Think about how often people end a sparring session only to discover at that time that they have some sort of injury unnoticed during the session.) If you are at rest and I strike you anywhere on your body (and couple this with the expectation that you will have a negative response) the chances of you responding as directed are greater. Its just people being human. 4.) S Dillman has done quite a bit to raise the level of examination of Kata from the standpoint of bunkai (application). I think his work from this standpoint has been a real service to the MA community. I personally believe that he may attribute a level of sophistication to the use of accupressure points and meridians that would not have ordinarily been associated with Okinawan MA. That's not to say that some of the conclusions he draws couldn't be accurate, only that from what I have read and experienced such applications would have been unlikely from a historical point of view. If you would like to pursue this farther, you may want to pick-up a copy of the latest translation of BUBISHI - THE KARATE BIBLE (translated by Patrick McCarthy). Despite his introduction of additional material on PP and meridians the translation is pretty faithful. Also if you are interested Victor Smith (isshim@aol.com ) of the Bushi No Te Isshinryu continues to study this material in depth and will probably be able to give you a much more informed response. If so, any thoughts. Please feel free to e-mail me >privately if you like. >Neal Konecky I went to a George Dillman seminar a few years ago. From a technical standpoint, I was very impressed. While there were a few things that Mr. Dillman said which I would leave open for debate about the nature of forms his ability to manipulate presure points is excellent. I saw several people get knocked out (and I do mean OUT), one of them from getting hit on the inner arm! I would strongly suggest that anyone go to a seminar by Mr. Dillman if the opportunity presents itself. Now, there was one thing that I was NOT impressed by during Mr. Dillman's seminar: his attitude towards martial artists who disagreed with his theories on pressure points. There were times when he ould be condescending about people who didn't think someone could get knocked out or whatever (frankly, in his own defense, they must never have seen a demonstration). I was surprised by this attitude and a little turned off. Then again, after the seminar itself was over Mr. Dillman did answer some questions that I and a friend had that we didn't get a chance to ask during the seminar itself. Like most people, Mr. Dillman appears to be a mixed bag. Written by M.C. Busman, originally posted to e-budo, quotes extensively from an article by Ernie Lopez which I couldn't find either, but remember reading when it first came out years ago. It seems that Jack Stern is still trying to pass himself of as a legitimate martial artist???! Apparently someone got an email asking them to join Stern's "Korean Yudo Association". Anyone really involved in Yudo care to comment on the below? - ------------------------------- The FACTS about Jackie Stern!! The "Grandmaster Stern" & the Honorless medal of honor fraud are one and the same man. Ernie Lopez of the Taekwondo Reporter blew this piece of waste in back in 1996, and also publicized the fact that the World Head of Family Sokeship Council (A Group run out of Guam and alternately Florida by Frank Sanchez--same group that gave Frank Dux a lifetime achievement award) recognized him as an outstanding martial artist. I believe he was expelled from the group when they discovered his fraud, but I can't be certain (I'll have to ask this week). Here are some excerpts from the article, "Jack Stern-The Great Pretender: The Biggest Fake to Ever Invade the Martial Arts Community" by Ernie Lopez of the Taekwondo Reporter (Lopez passed away in, I believe, 1999 & his site is down, or I'd just link y'all). "Jack Stern, a 67-year old, retired bread-truck driver, wept uncontrollably throughout his sentancing hearing. The Law finally caught up with Jackie Albert Stern. He has pleaded guilty and been sentanced. The sporadic articles confirming Stern's guilty Plea culminated in a three day media frenzy in South Florida over his sentencing. He finally obtained the exposure and recognition through media coverage that he so ardently sought with his lies and made up past. "What we knew at the BEGINNING of 1996 "Jackie Stern, was a Congressional Medal of Honor Winner and Prisoner of War in Korea. He bravely escaped after hiding himself among corpses during a forced march, where he recieved a large wound to the abdomen from the bayonet of a North Korean Soldier and did not emit a sound to avoid detection. He did not feel he had done enough to serve his country, and he stayed in the armed forces and served with Air America and with the CIA. Through all the years he spent in the armed forces in the Far East, he spent every minute of his free time studying martial arts with the great masters. That is why his judo and jiu jitsu were better than the people that studied in this country....After he retired from the armed forced he went back to New York City and became a policeman. He retired as a decorated detective from an elite unit. He had been in Judoover 50 years. His son had won an Olympic gold medal in Judo. He headed a Jiu Jitsu system he had inherited and the respected Korean Yudo Association. Even Time Magazine had Honored him by Putting him on their front Cover. Because of his war record most martial arts magazines had featured him and several halls of fame had inducted him. WOW what a resume! "What we knew at the END of 1996 "Jack Stern pleaded guilty in US District Court in Fort Lauderdale to wearing a Congressional Medal of Honor without authorization and altering his military discharge papers to fraudulently obtain State of Florida tags issued exclusively to Purple Heart recipients. Stern never served in combat. He made up the story that he had been a Korean Prisoner of War. In fact, the story he related as to how he escaped comes from a movie-just like the story that he cut the ears off the dead North Korean soldiers and hung them around his neck. Rather a difficult feat to accomplish considering the fact that according to the Broward County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Danny Ciacciarelli, "Stern never set foot in a continent where blood was shed". If Stern was never in the Far Eastit becomes obvious that the stories of training with the great masters of the Far East is just one more lie. Stern never trained in martial arts overseas. It sounds kind of redundant to say he was never in the CIA and never served in Air America. "....Stern was never a New York City detective as he claims. It's anyone's guess where he go the New York Police badge he kept flaunting around..... "There is no data to substantiate Mr. Stern's 50 years in Judo...." "The lie about his son being a Judo Olympic gold medalist was a source of amusement to most people he told it to. In the first place anyone that has been active in Judo...knows the names of their medalists. The people not in Judo were also amused when Stern proudly stated that his son won the gold medal in the 1987 Olympics. . . .There was no Olympics in 1987. "As has been reported in the local newspapers Stern's picture on the front cover of Time magazine was nothing more than one of those gags that can be bought in an amusement park. "Stern lied his way into a martial arts school in the Weston area, a suburb of Fort Lauderdale. Having the legitimacy of being an instructor in a martial arts school, Stern proceeded to call all the martial arts halls of fame. His Medal of Honor claim was one that the Halls of Fame could not resist and in 1995 he was inducted into all the places that he bothered to chase. He did not have any martial arts achievements. It was just his claim to the medal of Honor that the halls of fame reacted to. "The cruelest hoax was the one he perpetuated on his own students. While teaching in the Weston school, he charged everyone membership in the Korean Yudo Association, who issued rank certificates. This turns out to be a nonexistant organization in the State of Florida. . . .[The] Certificates were worthless--just as the similar promotion certificates he supposedly got from Korea are worthless. "..... "It does not matter whether he was a hustler or he is mentally ill. The fact is that he is a FAKE. A Grandmaster only among fakes. A figment of his own imagination. A legend only in his own mind. Yet he had the gall to look down on and speak ill of every martial artist he ever met. It was like he was validating himself by degrading everybody else. The media frenzy has been over Jackie the fake Medal of Honor winner. It should have been extended to include Jackie the fake martial artist. It appears that Stern may have also committed fraud in his involvement in the martial arts-a crime for which he has still not had to face a judge....."[end of edited excerpts] There you have it. Jack Stern, Jackie Stern, etc. is a liar, a fraud, a fake, an embarassment to the US Armed Forces, a baiter and a bully of legitimate martial artists, a self promotionist extrordinaire. I suggest anyone allied with this man disengage from him. Do not provide a living for this blood sucking phony, do not degrade your practice. Feel free to share this article.
