The adults were not. The children had such an advantage! They almost automatically used the techniques when beginning free sparring. I remember the first time I had to free spar. I had absolutely no idea what to do and was beaten up by a child. McD, I don't really know what your question is but, maybe I'll get to the cux of it in this. I've not been studing the cane for along time and I carry my training cane back and forth between my gym, office and home (as I have done with other MA weapons). The most comment I have gotten (at the office, in and elevator) was: "what did you do to yourself?" When I used to carry other MA weapons, I had to keep them hidden as much as posible (try this with a Bo). Certain ones, like Kamas, I should not even try to get by the guards at the office. So, I can vouch that the cane is not seen as a weapon. I guess we could train in "the umbrella" or "the golf club" and achieve the same result but, I don't know any Club Masters or Parasol Masters organization. I wrote a couple of weeks ago that I was sponsoring a Cane Masters seminar in Connecticut later this year and general info can be found at http://garciatkd.com/caneMaster1.htm Meanwhile, I've read a lot about knives and knife attack/defense. I'd love to hear further commentary on the cane, its function and usefulness (or not).
