I would probably end up tearing my shirt and pants with it if I actually carried it with me all the time. It does look more like a weapon than a cane. The best cane I have and the one I use and carry with me is a hickory cane I bought at the Daytona Beach flea market off of an old guy from Tenn.,, it cost me exactly five dollars and is great,, it needs a new coat of varnish on it though,, all those 7 strike techniques of Doju Nim Ji has caused me to wear the finish off of it. We are a recreation district program but must provide our own insurance. We meet in a local elementary school. We have about 50 students and 10 instructors. Very entertaining, very informative; I probably need to get out more but I can't think of a better way to spend a Saturday night. He even made a good try at getting us a discount at the Outback Steakhouse afterwords. We did have some pictures taken, check out http://dfwhapkido.com You'll see the smile on my face while I'm getting cranked on... David N. As mentioned, we have had no problem going through security in airports, in this country or in foreign countries. However, I do understand your like for normal drug store canes, but I would be concerned about them breaking .........as for me, I'll keep my combat cane. gary pieratt In a message dated 3/5/01 9:36:23 AM Central Standard Time, the_dojang-owner@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com writes: << I have carried a cane as my primary "travel" weapon for almost 30 years, and besides being a formidable self defense item, I found that as I approach 60, the cane sems to help me pre-board some airline flights. I never ASK for special treatment, but I never turn down a chance to NOT wait at the terminal. I once was asked as I walked down the jetway if I wanted a wheelchair, at which point I twirled my favorite demo cane and politely refused. As fas as canemaster canes are concerned, I find them a bit laughable in that they have the appearance of a weapon, or at best, they look a little "odd". The most favorable part of defending yourself with a cane is the surprise factor involved with turning something entirely non-threatening into a weapon. The best canes for self defense are the flea-market or drugstore variety that look like what they are.....an aid to walking, nothing more. As far as canemaster techniques are concerned, I'll defer to Master Rich Hodder, who attended one of the seminars, but has also seen a few HapKiDo instructors use a cane at seminars and demonstrations........J. The USTU and AAU TKD programs have interesting offerings that you might want to examine. Realizing you are ITF, not necessarily in the sense of joining these orgs but just in reviewing their offerings to perhaps see what the USTF or KATU might be able to offer.
