Did someone say "sword"? Dear Mr Choi: "...Chosen Seibub, a book on Korean sword techniques....." Now you did it. You went and used the "S-word" within my hearing. Can you give the Readers Digest review of this book? Is it a particular sword tradition, or more like a broad overview of swordsmanship? Is this a relatively new publ or a reprint of a previous? Is there information on the author or is it a compendium presented by a particular group or association? (And most important) Is it even remotely possible for me to order this or any other works and hope to get them while my eyes still work :-)? Can you identify any comparable books? I just joined, and here's a short presentation of myself. I'm 29, live in Uppsala, Sweden. I train at "Stockholms Tae-Kwon-Do Akademi". I've recently taken up TKD again after a couple of years of inactivity. I got 9 gup in '92, and I've trained some other MA's, for short periods of time. Now I'm at it again, and it feels great! I also manipulate balisongs. The rest of my spare time I spend on my girlfriend and computers. Greetings to you all! Johan Eliasson. ------------------------------ From: "Sims, Bruce W. A couple times we had to move to the side of the road (visitors have to walk and leave car at the bottom) so that monks could drive by in VERY nice vehicles..." I'm probably going out on a limb here. At our Abbey in California the monks in residence lead a relatively classical monastic existence. I can't say that I have seen a Lexus or Infinity during my retreats. On the other hand maybe the equivalent to the Korean "SUV" story is the number of clerics in the US of various denominations who preside over relatively middle class or impoverished communities but manage to do quite well for themselves (including the odd air-conditioned dog house). From what few resources I have examined, apparently monestaries in Korean historically did quite well for themselves including keeping slaves, collecting rent on temple properties and exerting un-due influence in political activities. Nor were the monks of history necessarily the transcendent personalities ala Kwai Chang Caine and Master Po. Religious folks still need to use the bathroom at least once a day just like the rest of us, and being a religious does not mean that it necessarily smells any better. I think that if one does not have a problem with the instruction they have received over the years, and they don't have visions of early greatness, then questions about their past should not make them uncomfortable. Integrity, being one of our tenets, should always prevail. None the less, when it comes down to getting on the mat, it is very hard to hide weakness. I think the key here is, just tell the truth. The event will focus on pressure point application, how the points fit into any style to amplify your effectiveness and how to translate your forms into seriously effective street applications. I know, I’ve been knocked out on several occasions with the use of this information. I feel that this information is crucial to the serious martial artist. Seminar is June 9th 2001 and will be held at U.S. Taekwondo – Hapkido Martial Arts Center, 905 N. Kingsway Rd., Seffner Fl. That includes some adults, and my coaches fees and courses. At about 20-25 students, I'd say it's time to look for another insurance company. Or was it just 19th > century types beating the bejaysus out of one another? > Donnla. > - From what I gather it there were instructors and "systems" for the instruction of the Bata similar to other European Weapons systems. It's use included self defense and combat, "recreational" single combat, and "recreational" group combat under the auspices of "Faction" Fighting. Factions, as I gather, were basically rival clubs that enjoyed beating on each other with knobbed walking sticks. The "game" involved using the stick to knock the hat off of your opponents head. Naturally, all head attacks could be "lowered" to other parts of the body both as distractions, feints, and actual attacks outside of the "game." The Bata was used both to strike and to block/parry. Apparently it was held about 1/3 the way up the shaft from the base with the knob as the striking point and the lower third as a guard over the forearm. The knob was apparently often weighted by being filled with lead. Women would also participate in these mob "fights." From what I gather, they filled stockings or scarves with rocks and used them as flails against men of the opposing Faction (read "team / club"). The men were allowed to block / parry these attacks by the women but were barred from attacking or counter attacking them. Apparently after the "Faction Fight" was over (typically on weekends I think), they all went back to being friends. Weird. One English writer has referred to Ireland as the Land of Broken Hearts and Broken Heads. Now you know why. Blackthorn "roots" (the knob on the stick is the rootball) were used at one time because it was thought that injuries from a blackthorn healed more quickly. I've been given to understand that the term "Shillelagh" was actually the name of an Oak forest from which many walking sticks were harvested. There are many references to the use of the Bata in Irish history and folklore. One Irish ballad dating back to the 18th century or before tells an amusing story of an English military recruiter who tries to recruit two Irish men. The men take the recruiter's money for joining up then when the recruiter threatens them with his and his compatriots swords ("We'll out with our swords!"), the two Irish men use their walking sticks to beat them into unconsciousness and throw their swords into the sea. hahaha Take a look at the web page and the list I posted. Lots of good info there. I'd like to encourage your participation in these events. Two days of training with Ireno Fargas could help our Olympic Style Sparring Competition as a whole. I've invited and recieved commitments from many of the coaches and competitors that recently participated the US TKD Open in Las Vegas. I have also talked with the local Army Team coach and he will be sending some of their members to the championship. Their coach is on the All Army TKD Team and the competition should be excellent. I have also invited the AAU National Team to this Region 12 competition. Each Team Member will compete in "consolation matches" as well as compete with the appropriate division winner for "Grand Champ". This way, each competitor will get to fight at least twice. Win or lose, you'll get to compete as many times as possible. For those coming from outside of Western Washington, housing, competition, and training expenses will be about $150.00. The $150.00 will pay for your hotel, seminars on the 26th and 27 as well as the competition. We'll locate people in a hotel where it is likely that you will not need transportation. Food and other expenses will be the competitors responsibility. I'll work to drive the $150.00 down (not very likely). I am proposing four people to a hotel room for two evenings. The cost for the tournament and seminars are also included in the $150.00. If competitors know someone in this area and stays with them or you'd like to stay in our dojang, we'll reduce the cost. I hope this will be of interest. For more information about Master Fargas, see www.champions2000.com. If you have additional questions please see www.angelfire.com/ma/nwtkd, call (253) 536-1146 or email me at this address.
