Yes, he will be demonstating and teaching a Taegukkwan form during the event. Taegukkwan (Korean for Tai Chi) is well know and their are many Masters in the US who are familiar with it such as Dr. He Young Kimm and Myung Yong Kim. I am sure that there are more if you look around. Check www.martialartsresource.com for some of the best Korean terminology or http://hometown.aol.com/taegukkwan for TaeGukKwan info. Hope that helps. Everyone had good things to say. Open events like this are not to promote joining a different organization. I don't think that is the purpose of any open event. I gave people of different backgrounds a chance to celebrate their common bond. The Art of Hapkido. I commend him for doing a great job. I had several Korean GrandMasters who were amazed to see TKD, Hapkido, Kempo, Karate, Kung Fu students all competing at my tournament. One of them asked me directly: "How did you get the other people outside of Taekwondo to come to a Taekwondo tournament?" My answer was "I invited them." And I think that people have come to expect the best setting at GM West's events because his has the best intentions. Kudo's. Dear Patrick: "....I have no desire or need to "reconcile" with the Kido Hae - they can go their way, I will go mine...." Yes, thank you. I think most of us understand that particualr position, and I know that it is always there if we ever want to go back to it. I would encourage you to consider that the rest of us would probably benefit to some extent or another by working together with some level of tolerance. Try doing the math. For the last 30 years various people have been back-biting, criticizing, undercutting and sabotaging each others' efforts. Maybe its time to try a different approach. Do I agree with everyone. No, of course not, and its not my job to convert them to my particular point of view. I just don't think that the art of Hapkido in particular and the Korean arts in general have been well-served by all this endless pissing. Now I don't pretend to be able to stop it, but I don't have to support it or even be a part of it. And I am intending to continue to identify as many things as we share in common rather than play-up the differences and I encourage other folks to do the same. If by doing this we can develope better informed instructors, more dedicated students, more stable organizations and a brighter future for the arts does it really make that much difference who gets 1st Prize in the weekly MA One-up Olympics? I think we are all pretty familiar with each others’ backgrounds or standings. Would it be a particular problem if we agreed to use first names as long as the posts are signed? > Response: I prefer to be addressed as: - - McD - - Big Ken - - The Man from Glad - - Mr. Crown Royale Which one I select depends on my prozac induced mood swing. However, when I was running the HKD program at GCFTKD, students ordered these same uniforms (without the KHF patch and Korean on the back). I believe Scott ordered them from BEST? I can't find one of the catalogs here, so I'm not sure. (And Scott now lives in VA) I know you could get some Moosoolsa stuff from them, even some KHF patches and window stickers, etc. (KHF has the pointing finger as the symbol, you can see one at my website) I was also wondering on the subject of canes if anyone has seen the bamboo "Combat Cane" advertised in Asian World of Martial Arts in person, and what they thought of this for a training cane? They sell them for $19.95 retail, so a school owner could get them cheaper with a wholesale account. From the picture, it has a large crook that should be able to go around the neck for those techniques. I've only seen them in the catalog, so I can't say much more about them. Just throw it out as another resource and hope to hear from someone who has used one and what they thought/think. My cane is from Korea, and I'm not sure just where my HKD instructor bought them, so I don't know of many resources in the States. Just wondering if this one from AWMA is a good one or not. What the heck is a studman???? A great piece of training equipment. It's similar to a heavy bag, but mounted on a "stud" that is inserted into a slot drilled out of the floor. Better than a hanging bag because it always returns immediately upright by the use of a heavy duty spring attached to the stud at the center of the bag. Well, we have kick the snot out of both of ours and are looking for replacements. The ones we have were made by a company call "Contact Sports Equipment" here in Tampa, but they are no longer in business. I understand that this type of equipment may also be used by football players for indoor training as you can apply a hit on it and it returns upright. Anybody have a reference for a similar replacement? (I'll bet that when I mentioned broken studman, you thought I was talking about Mike Tomlinson....)
