How did this blend get started? Both groups seem to work well with each other within the schools. I think it makes for a great learning environment. Does anyone have any personal experiences they would share about this type of training? Richard Strozzi Hecler is the Aikido guy largely responsible for the MA training program. He's also a former Marine and in his youth he was an Olympic class athlete. He also did a pilot program for the Army's Green Berets. You can read about it in his book "In Search of the Warrior Spirit" He's also a psychologist who incorporated Aikido into his practice you can read about it in his book "The Anatomy of Change". I'll bet his Aikido is morphed by the Corp into something that more closely resembles Hapkido! Hapkido - Good for You Good For ME! Semper Fi! WTF to Try Out New Rules After Technical Seminar By Kim Cheong-won Staff Reporter The World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) wrapped up their three-day technical meeting and seminar in Seoul on Friday with many experts' expressing their opinions on the amendment of taekwondo competition rules. With over 40 people from 30 countries attending, participants exchanged opinions mainly focusing on expanding the competition area, the duration of matches and implementing a graduated scoring system. ``It is anticipated that contestants will display highly difficult techniques and actively attacking skills if the amended competition rules with the graduated scoring system are put into practice," said a WTF spokesman. ``Thus, it is required to extend the scope of competition area to accommodate their increased movement and to secure minimal safety distance between contestants.'' Currently, an 8m x 8m area in the inner part of the competition area of 12m x 12m is used and the outer part of the contest area is called the alert area. In the seminar, many taekwondo coaches suggested expanding the inner part of the competition area to 10m x 10m and the existing alert area shall be deleted and only boundary line of 12m x 12m should remain. When it comes to the duration of the contest, Yang Jin-bang, professor of the Yongin University, was quoted as saying in the seminar that: ``After the Sydney Olympic Games, many people indicated that the duration of the contest is too long, comparing to the greater deal of energy consumed by contestants than other sports. By this result, contestants fail to manage the competition dynamically to the end and consequently the rate of interest in the competition by spectators would be lessened.'' The amendment proposal was that the duration of contest be four two- minute rounds with one minute of rest between rounds. However, one round shall be automatically ended when one of two contestants scores three points and is declared winner of the round. Presently, the duration of the contest is three three-minute rounds with one minute of rest between rounds in male and female divisions. With the amendment proposals, the WTF plans to apply the new competition rules to university-level matches that are scheduled in May and June this year. After that, the organization will finalize the rules and turn them over to the WTF Executive Board before September 2001. The WTF boasts a membership of over 160 countries and over 40 million people practicing the martial art worldwide and there are two governing bodies for the sport -- the North Korea-led International Taekwondo Federation (ITF), and the South-led WTF. First off i'd like to say that JR West , Mrs. West and his peole were great hosts of this event. They worked hard to make us feel at home and also make sure everything was as we expected or needed. Also great were the participants in the seminar, all were motivating and friendly. For all ive heard of the Hapkido rift, I didnt see or experience any of that in Mississippi. There were representatives from most Major hapkido affiliations and some of the smaller organizations. The hallmark of this seminar was the fact that it was more of a family reunion than a seminar. There were nothing but smiling faces throughout the event. The instructors made it a very enjoyable time for all present. Hapki!
