When you advertise, what format do you use- flyers, posters, adverts in local newspapers or ma magazines, TV- adverts? Lastly, and most importantly, how many new students start as a result of seeing and advert? It would be an honor. I'm always looking to learn something new. You may have seen me, there weren't too many adult sparring who had shoulder length dreadlocks! How was your experience there? It had been my third tournament ever...and I had a pretty good time. It was nice to be exposed to some many different styles of the arts. A wise man can learn about something different, because it will bring him closer to what he knows best. I stayed at the Holiday Inn at the airport for two nights..I wasn't sure if I was going to feel like driving back immediately. So the whole time I was there I wasn't rushed to hit the highway (I live about 2 hours away), and I was able to concentrate on giving my best. Those warm-ups are important...I definately don't feel like I did when I was 18. - ----------------------------- From: "Jim Griffin" Date: Sun, 11 Mar 2001 09:57:26 -0500 Subject: the_dojang: Re: Paying respects to Master West Outstanding job, sir! Congrats on your victories both in the ring at the Arnold Battle of Columbus and in overcoming your injury. I wish I would have known that you were competing in that division - I was a few rings away fighting in the 30-39 men's Olympic advanced belt division. You could have kicked me in the head a couple of times to warm up. :-) Maybe next year. - - --- begin quoted message --- From: "Udell Holmes II" Date: Fri, 9 Mar 2001 19:13:35 -0500 Approximately three weeks ago, I posted a short message inquiring if anyone had any secrets to healing an ankle that had been "rolled". The email I sent was really brief. I usually wouldn't post anything like that, but I had been training for sparring at Arnold's Battle of Columbus. The tournament was only two weeks away, and I couldn't believe I was going to miss it. I took home the gold medal, Taekwondo Olympic Sparring, age 30-39 (Beginner division-7th gup). I stuck with the back kick, side kick and punching when my opponent was too close for me to do anything effective with my only kicking leg. It wasn't until my third match that someone finally caught on that I was not going to be kicking with the other leg anytime soon. He adjusted his body to compensate, and I started with a little footwork to get him to change his stance. After competing, my foot has not been re-injured in any way. - - --- end quoted message --- ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Sun, 11 Mar 2001 17:41:42 PST Subject: Re: the_dojang: Korean And Other Arts > I have noticed that throughout the US there is an increase in Kali and other > stick fighting styles being taught in Taekwondo schools. My late Eskrima instructor, Mike Inay, may have had something to do with your finding Eskrima in TKD schools. He just died 5 months ago, but years prior to that he founded the Inayan Training Organization. It was a way for martial arts schools of any style to include teachings from the weapons based FMAs (Filipino Martial Arts, Arnis/Kali/Eskrima) into their curriculum. I teach traditional Hwa Rang Guemdo at the pleasure of my teacher GM Hyi Koo, 8th Dan, HwaRang Kumdo who also is the director for the World HwaRang Kumdo Assn out of Chicago. They have recently established a Kumdo website for the organization and I can post that here if people are interested. I also maintain a link for that organization through my own website (or will soon). In addition, Todd Miller teaches a style of Korean sword art which is an integral part of the Hapkido art that he practices (Jung Ki Kwan) under GM Lim. Until quite recently there was a North American Blademaster Assn which I understand from Todd will be reorganizing under the US Sword Assn and will provide an independent venue for individuals interested in form and cutting as an alternative to those activities overseen by the Japanese art pratitioners. There are also a Kumdo Digest and several Kumdo/Kendo and Kumdo/Kum-bop. I have had occasion to visit the Sword Forum and while their intention is to provide a democratic representation of all sword arts, my impression was that the site was overwhelmingly dominated by Japanese art practitioners. The E-Budo Net is apparently likewise dominated by practitioners of Japanese art (including a good representation from the Shinkendo folks under S Obata) though in this latter case one might anticipate such given the name of the site, yes? As far as the other Hapkido weapons, I teach or research six traditional Hapkido weapons including soh bong, dan bong, cane, sword, chang bong, and knife each being idenitifed with a rank of BB. I wish I could toot my horn as a master of these, but in good conscience I can't. Better that I refer you to GM Myung, Kwang Sik whose instruction forms the basis for a great deal of what I teach. I hope there is something here that is of help. If I have misunderstood, please feel free to zero-in on something in particular and I'll do my best to get what info I can. BTW: Just to clarify, GM Myung had occasion to practice kendo in his earlier years and teaches this material as that portion of his curriculum identified as Kendo. While I respect his decision in this, the purist in me has caused me to instruct in traditional Kumdo (Guem-bop) for that material. The substitution of GM Koos' traditional Kumdo for GM Myungs Kendo is my own and I believe supports greater authenticity of the art. My students would say physically,,, my wife would say mentally!! Hey Rick,, I'll go ask some of the football coaches this week if they have any contacts on the "studman" pads,,, I know when I coached with them we used to get videos from that company showing all kinds of pads and blocking equipment. I think I still have one laying around the house. I remember the first time I visited Master Nabors Dojang and saw those big ole studman pads sticking out of the floor and coming from a football background I recognized them right away. After seeing them and watching Rick and Javier beat on each other like a couple of Eskimo's at a baby seal keg party I thought "yeah, I am gonna like this place"! ------------------------------ From: J T Date: Mon, 12 Mar 2001 06:31:39 -0800 (PST) Subject: the_dojang: Moving up the ladder of Kumdo Well I just took my 8th gup test for kumdo yesterday. It was a nice 45 minute test consisting of two long forms, two short forms, basic striking techniques and 2 5 minute sparring sessions. I sparred with my seniors who, out of the kindness of their hearts, proceeded to whoop on me like an unwanted step child. after a couple of nice welts caused by hori-chigi (waist strike) and sonmuk-chigi (wrist strike), I think I passed. The boxers and wrestlers deal with this time structure just fine. And lets not forget the Judo players they do just fine with their time system. I hope to God that this change doesn't come into fruition and if it does then it is short lived.
