For those of you that are Oriental sword buffs you might initially be turned off to find that it focuses on western swordwork and history. What I have found most compelling is the more personal insights this book lends to individuals who have actually been in sword duals (including one here in Chicago-- in Jackson Park of all places!). I think there is an attitude or atmosphere that is not considered when folks are dancing about with their sword blades waving in the air. Amberger seems to have caught this atmosphere pretty well in his writing and his selection of various reports. For those who have routinely been caught up in the regular examination of straight versus curved architecture it may be interesting to know that this argument has been going on for many generations and Amberger does a great job of providing a pretty balanced report of its history. Hello Bruce: The main idea is to bring together a bunch of nice people who are willing to share three days of good sweat, hard work, and who won't mind the blisters that are sure to develop. Here is a short sampling of our workshop. The first seminar covered the basics of the sword, i.e. etiquette, drawing, caring for, nomenclature, meditation, and basic cutting etc. The second seminar will revisit the basics, much more cutting practice, Jook Do v/s Dan Bong blocking, live blade cutting practice, and eventually go on to teaching the first form of our curriculum. The next seminar will depend somewhat on how much has been retained, and the interest in further training. You, and everyone else are ALWAYS welcome at my dojang. Sincerely, Rudy ------------------------------ From: "Rudy Timmerman" Date: Wed, 14 Mar 2001 00:11:23 -0500 Subject: the_dojang: Service I just want to take a moment to reflect on the tremendous service Master Terry provides for the martial arts community. In the short while I have had the pleasure of being part of the Digest, I have been able to make many new friends and learn much. For example, the other day I received a very nice post from "THE MAN DOWNUNDA". It seems that Geoff ran across an old Black Belt magazine with an article about a match I had with a Golden Gloves Champ back in the early 70's. Geoff was nice enough to send me a copy and, since I had lost most of my stuff in a fire, this was very much appreciated. More importantly, I had searched for someone with knowledge on the single Juhl Bong, and I was ever so happy to find out that our Aussie Master is a specialist in this phenominal weapon. Now I just have to find a way to get to Australia. Hmmmm. Ray, without you, none of these things would have been possible for me, and I for one am ever so glad to see you are feeling better and back at the job. The address is 3202 W Montrose, corner of Montrose and Kedzie. Someone asked me about it and I have never heard of it. Master Sims, that's kind of your neck of the woods, any input. Any info anyone can give me would be appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help. If action is what you are looking for all you have to > do now is allow hand strikes to score, I am sure that will be next. I personally regret that the punches to the hogu are almost never scored (got some fighters in my school who really enjoy punching ;) but I think if punching to the head will be allowed, many fighters will concentrate on punching only and a few basic kicks, and we will have a new version of the current situation, when we have people kicking roundhouses and back kicks to the hogu only. I certainly wouldn`t like WTF TKD to become another form of kickboxing. This could be even more dangerous when you consider that WTF sparring is full contact - it`s easier to knock someone out with a punch to the face than with a beautiful jumping spinning kick to the head. We take part in tournaments organised by a certain ITF style splinter group in Poland and we like it very much, but we really cannot understand why are we the only people using spinning kicks as counters, and most competitors rely on side kick, roundhouse and punches ;) Regards - -- Piotr Bernat dantaekwondo@lublin.home.pl http://www.taekwondo.prv.pl ------------------------------ From: "Dunn, Danny J RASA" Date: Wed, 14 Mar 2001 08:49:24 -0600 Subject: the_dojang: RE: Recommended Sites Ray, Thanks for recommending the two sites.
