The two groups are on good terms. The two groups have separate responsibilities in the United States. The KATU is responsible for training and promoting the Junior ITF World Championship team. The USTF is responsible for the Senior ITF Team. However, members of either group can compete for slots on either team. Two or three KATU folks will join us in Italy for the Senior Worlds this summer. Master Choi Jung Hwa is expected to take over the ITF after Gen. Choi retires, with the blessing of the ITF Masters and congress. No one expects that there will be any change in status of the USTF or KATU at that time (or any other national group elsewhere). There really is no reason to change status. Both groups teach the same things, US certificates are issued with the same number series, both fulfill the duties required of them. Lived in Andersonville, which is on Clark and Foster Avenues. Montrose is very near there. There is a large Korean community over by Lawrence. The further you go, u run into a large Polish community. I used to stop there and pick up a few Polish sausages. Man, they were big. South of that is Broadway, mostly Hispanic. Try the salsa salad bar at Pedro's Bar and Grill. Familiar with Degenberg Academy over on Western, about one block or so from Montrose Ave. Nate Defensor, of Arnis/Esrima used to teach there. Degenberg was in the movie "Above the Law" But, not familiar with your school. Incidentally, if you go down Lawrence Ave around the 2000 block, stop by Ms. Kims restaurant. Makes a great Kimchee soup. Cheers, McD... __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! When the Major General asked KS Hwang to form the KATU as competition for the USTF there was a split (this from higher ranked ITFers that were also unhappy with Chuck Sereff). Glad to hear things have improved since then. As a current studnt of GM Lee you are probably better able to speak to this than I. Do you have information regarding GM Lees' affiliation or stylistic associations? Best Wishes, Bruce >> Hi Bruce, as you said in your first post, Master Lee doesnt say much about organizations or the derivation of his art. He refers to it as Jung Do, and when I asked him if that was a "style" of Hapkido, he just replied "It means the right way" and walked away. As far as I know, he is not affiliated with any organization...he seems to feel the same way about the politics of Hapkido as I do...to stay away from it. He once told me his teacher was Sin-Am who I believe was a Korean Monk living at Mt. Jiri in Korea. I wish he would talk more about his lineage, but I had the same problem when I trained with Master Gedo Chang in Lombard....maybe I just ask too many questions :). I do agree with you about his commitment to the training and his students...he and I are sometimes the only two at the school and he trains with me alone when I get there in between class times. Ive trained with him on and off over the years because my job had relocated me to Indianapolis, but now that Im back in Chicago I plan on training with him a couple of times a week. I have only been back with him for about 2 months...so as I train more Ill find out more about his lineage. Ill keep in touch Mark ------------------------------ From: "Rudy Timmerman" Date: Thu, 15 Mar 2001 00:38:00 -0500 Subject: the_dojang: Sword Bruce writes: > I noticed that you didn't stipulate any particular sword Form so I am going > to conclude that this is a more independent or generic approach to sword? > Can I also guess that you wouldn't object to participation by practitioners > of the "Japanese persuasion" or would you prefer to limit it to essentially > Korean Form. Hello Bruce: As a younger man, I traveled for quite a few years visiting Dojangs, Dojos, Kwoons etc. as I ran into them across the continents. You might say I was the proverbial Martial Arts Bum, and I carried a white belt with me wherever I went (I still do). How can I not accept students of other arts, after so many places welcomed me with open arms. My dojang is open to anyone who likes to sweat, regardless of their preference of art. We're open from 5-10 pm Monday through Thursday. I keep the weekends open to do seminars and tournaments. With regards to the sword Hyung. Although I have practiced with a variety of Masters of the Sword, including Japanese Iaido and Kendo, I can't teach what I have just scratched the surface on, and I stick to the curriculum I know. Given my background in Kuk Sool Won Hap Ki Do, the hyung I teach are from that origin. Hope that does not change your mind about visiting. Sincerely, Rudy BTW, Ray: The home rules you mentioned ARE from places like EFC. ------------------------------ From: Darlene Quayle Date: Wed, 14 Mar 2001 22:12:17 -0800 Subject: the_dojang: Re: Home Rules These are the home rules that we have at our dojang. I do not know the origin, but students under 18 are asked about them, and are given gentle reminders about how to be a good citizen both in the dojang and at home. The two that are focused upon the most are # 6 (read at least as much as you watch TV or play videogames) and #7 (clean your room). On the standard application form, parents fill out this report before each test, and students submit a report of their grades from school. Black belts under age 18 are required to maintain at least a 3.0 grade point average. (I left off the 1-5 scale for each item in the interest of space) PARENT'S REPORT AND EVALUATION Our students should strive to follow the student home rules. Parents-please take the time to give a home report. Thank you. Key: 1= Never, 2= Occasionally, 3= Sometimes, 4=Most of the time, 5= Always 1. Children shall greet their parents when they enter the house and tell them good-bye when they leave. 2. Children will at all times be respectful to their parents and grandparents. 3. Children will at all times be truthful. 4. Children will strive for a good relationship with their brothers and sisters. 5. Children will willingly help with household chores. 6. Children shall read at least an equal amount of time per day as they watch TV or play video games. 7. Children shall be responsible for the upkeep and neatness of their own room. 8. Children will practice daily cleanliness in the matter of hair, teeth, and body. 9. Children shall abide by their parent's decisions. 10. Children shall not interrupt adult conversations. 11. Children shall refrain from rowdy behavior at home. 12. Children shall possess an active mind, body and spirit. 13. Children will diligently study their schoolwork both at school and at home. 14. Children will at all times show respect for their school teachers and their peers. SPECIAL COMMENTS: - ----------- Students who have stayed with TKD in our dojang and have reached upper ranks are responsible, involved citizens of their communities, have good relationships with their parents, and are often top of their class in school. Hmm. Interesting. I don't have an answer to your question---but I do have a business card from the head of my Hapkido association, stating: Grand Master Duke Lee (my note: Li Ki Duk originally, I believe) World Taekwondo Federation 9th degree black belt Korean Hapkido Association 9th degree black belt Korea Kom Do Association 6th degree black belt ...though upon reflection, I note that his Hapkido association is KoreaN, as opposed to KoreA. Are there others who are 9th in both KHA (with an 'N' :) and WTF? Truthfully speaking, I would have thought most of the older korean 1st/2nd generation people in hapkido would also have TKD belts of similar ranks. Any other KnHA and WTF 9th degrees both? According to Jae Whan Lee, Executive Director of the Korea Hapkido Federation Lee Sung Soo holds a 7th Dan from the KHF. His 9th Dan is only a recognition rank for the Kwan that he founded. As far as his WTF 9th Dan, what Korean isn't an 8th or 9th Dan with the WTF? He is the same Korean that allegedly promoted Scott Shaw to 7th Dan in the KHF. This has been refuted by the KHF headquarters. There are at least 5 Koreans in Florida who claim to be 9th Dan in both Hapkido and Taekwondo. ------------------------------ From: Charles Richards Date: Thu, 15 Mar 2001 05:45:30 -0800 (PST) Subject: the_dojang: Georgia AAU championship I believe the GA AAU TKD championships have been moved to May 19th.
