When he gave me his business card he was the KHF Secretary General." I have a video tape with some old films of Kim Yong-jin performing two and three man throws. It has GM Ji Han Jae performing some throws as well as GM Choi, Yong Sool demonstrating a thing or two. It was a documentary filmed by the Korean Government around 1970 I believe. It begins with several KukSoolWon masters demonstrating some staff and sword forms. I have shown this tape on occasion during our evening social gathering at the KMAIA annual camp. One of those masters has formed his own style called KukSoolDo and lives in the US. I don't know his name or where at in the US. If any DD members know him he might have copies of this video as well. I came accross his website while surfing www.martialartsresource.com but I forgot his name. If its any consolation at all I can tell you that you have not been beating that drum by yourself. In my experience the problem is that you can drive a truck between what people say they want and what they really want, as well as what they say and what they will do. Remember that survey project I was sending out to people? I have not gotten a lot of responses back but the ones I have received are demonstrating a very interesting pattern. To make a long story short most of the people who have responded characterize their involvement in Hapkido not as a study or a life style as much as an activity--- and a marginal one at that. Now maybe I'm off base here, but so far only about ¼ to 1/3 of the respondents seem to see Hapkido as anything more than good self-defense and a decent way to stay in shape. Now, at the risk of getting my head handed to me, if we were to generalize this to other Korean arts such as TKD and TSD this might go a long way towards explaining why all those high-toned ideals that get shouted at the end of class before everyone bows out seem to stay on the mat long after the students leave. I've seen cases where kids leave the mat only scream at their parents, and the same can be said for adults who fight with the sig other who stops by to pick them up. I tried intervening once and was told that it was none of my business and that my responsibilities stopped at the mat. (Theres' a real success story for you.) Take a look at some of the behavior reported at tournaments and demo-s---- and (sorry, Ray) even some of the exchanges on the Internet. To me it seems that folks are willing to spew the words but incorporating such into their daily life is something else again. And you know what really gripes me? If teachers start to press the issue, I bet more often than not they would be accused of taking the whole thing way too seriously, rather than being applauded for simply doing their job. Go Figure. All the same, son't expect me to stop beating the drum any time soon. "If a man does not keep pace with his fellow, perhaps it is because he marches to the beat of a different drum"-Thoreau. I saw an ad for it in a tournament program book recently and wondered if it was common for tkd practicioners to get a foot massage after a tournament. _______________________________________________________ Send a cool gift with your E-Card http://www.bluemountain.com/giftcenter/ ------------------------------ From: Steve Seo Date: Fri, 16 Mar 2001 08:50:29 -0800 (PST) Subject: the_dojang: Largest Hapkido Organization Dear List Members, I was curious as to what criteria and from which sources people are making the determination of the largest Hapkido organization. Number of schools? Number of registered members? Is it solely based on what masters of the KHF claiming? I'm just a little curious because I've heard a lot of people mention that the KHF is the largest. From my understanding in terms of total number of registered black belts as well as number of schools, the Kidohae and the KHF are very comparable and there is no clear cut larger organization. This may contradict what other people have said, but I'm not stating it as a challenge, just an observation. The reality of the situation is that, in the end, it doesn't really matter. In Korea, as well as in the US, martial artists join the KHF and the Kidohae based on their own judgment and most people seem to be happy with whichever choice they make. Is the Kidohae a Hapkido only organization like the Tae Han Hapkido Hyophwe, the Hankook Hapkido Hyophwe, etc? BTW, does the Saemaul HKD Assoc still exist? My Canemasters cane has raised some eyebrows with Canadian airport security ("Why is it so pointy?") but they have always let me continue with it (Bad knees and knee brace help). I have had no problem elsewhere. There is more concern with my baton keychain. As far as durability goes the drugstore canes do not last for me. I found horse canes in hardware stores in the States for about $8. They are hickory and have the same dimensions as Canemasters', although some of the crooks are a little small. They look like drugstore canes, but sturdier, and I have had no trouble with security at all with these canes. They are great for training once you get the edges rounded off. I never want to be without my Canemasters but there are times when I do not want to abuse it. On a side note: I love the look of terror on the students when I offer to demonstrate techniques with my Canemasters. It keeps them from getting too frisky with me.
