There has been alot of talk about what Hapkido organization is the largest. Just because an organization is larger than another does not mean that it is better. It might even mean that it is just easier to be a member or the requirements are not as strict. I am not saying that the Kido hae or the KHF are not good I am just saying that size has nothing to do with being a good organization or not! Dear Steve: "...I was curious as to what criteria and from which sources people are making the determination of the largest Hapkido organization. Number of schools? Number of registered members? Is it solely based on what masters of the KHF claiming?...." There is always a re-occuring comment about a relationship of some sort between various organizations and the Korean Government. Is there a branch (say, Dept of Education, for instance) that can give the kind of definitive numbers you are asking about? Recently Ray made a comment about the number of 8th and 9th degree in the Kukkiwon which surprised me, but I had a feeling of envy thinking that any organization ought to be able to provide accurate census material. I also liked the idea that Richard mentioned about having a directory--- though the Kidohae might have quite a challenge there as it covers so many different arts. To be honest, I don't know if this kind of stuff comes down to anything more than "bragging rights." But the idea of a directory might be something that would identify card-carrying members, as well as identify locations for people who are wanting to find a particular art within a specific geographic area. Maybe this would start a trend so that each of the major Korean MA organizations would provide a directory of registered members and their rank. Stanley Pranin (Ed. AIKIDO JOURNAL) keeps an on-going directory of members on his website, I think. I know I got a copy of one of his first directories when it came out sometime back. In his case there was a charge for a copy but from what I understand people weren't shy about paying for a copy. I think it would go a long way towards reducing a lot of the confusion. And from a management standpoint I bet it would encourage organizations to keep better membership records and tighter communication with their members, but now I'm just spitballing. I saw an ad for it in a tournament program book recently and wondered if it was common for tkd practicioners to get a foot massage after a tournament." Everyone can benefit from foot massage. Even if they do not have pain from an injury it is a good way to stimulate the body. Reflexology is a science which believes that there are reflex points in the feet that link all parts and organs of the body. Proper manipulation of these reflex points can send an increased blood supply, via the 70,000 nerve endings in the feet, to areas that need help. Lower back pain, headaches, gall stones, indigestion, PMS, tension, and many more common ailments can benefit from this form of natural health care. Most doctors (physicians) agree that over 75% of our health problems today can be linked to stress! Fortunately, reflexology can help to alleviate the effects of stress in our lives by inducing deep relaxation which allows the blood to flow and the nerves to unwind. A relaxed body has the energy it needs to fight off disease and combat nasty germs. So, with all of these health benefits, why are so many people unfamiliar with reflexology? Probably, because like many natural and alternative health care resources, it has been widely misunderstood and misrepresented by today's western medical approach. Like most natural approaches to health, reflexology has been around for a very long time (since 2330 B.C. when it was practiced by the Egyptians). Eunice Ingham developed reflexology as we know it today. Her first book on this subject was printed in 1938 and since 1942 reflexology seminars have been taught worldwide. Some by me :) Reflexologists do not treat for specific conditions, but simply indicate where there may be areas of congestion. Gravity has a tendency to cause things to settle to the bottom - in this case our feet - reflexologists break up this congestion so that the body can once again create its own homeostasis (a balance of all the working parts). Disharmony of one or more parts will manifest as disease in the body. There is nothing the practitioner does, however, that can worsen any condition, and there may or may not be some uncomfortable effects as the body heals itself. This will depend on the individual being treated. Drinking plenty of water after treatments is always beneficial. Any unpleasant affects will quickly pass. During a reflexology session, only the hands of the practitioner are used on the feet while the client relaxes comfortably in a special chair or reclines on a table. Other relaxation techniques may be employed such as aromatherapy or soft music and lighting. There is nothing the client needs to do except to indicate where there might be areas of tenderness on the foot as they are being worked on. I am not a "Physician" this is Just my 2 cents. Number of schools? Number of registered members? Is it solely based on what masters of the KHF claiming?" I spent a little time in Korea and only came accross four Kido schools during that time. (One I trained at for a full year , KukSoolWon). But there is no difficulting finding a KHF Hapkido school anywhere in Korea. I think that claiming an equal number of members is a little cavalier. The KHF only has Hapkido members, not 31 different martial arts. Let's compare apples to apples.
